I'M COMING FOR YOU!

« on: June 26, 2011, 01:08:07 PM »

HI
Okay i will go straight to the point with this one;
My wife, like many others is a massive fan of True Blood,
She has been counting down the time since months ago and now we have less than 6 hours to go(believe me she keeps muttering how long left).
I must confess i am not a massive fan of the books nor the series. Is there anyone else on this site who is a true blood maniac and if so are your hands starting to sweat?

Sorry, but consider me done with this forum as long as A.J. Bauer is here. I detest disrespectful, rude, arrogant and childish people. I don't care what the hell you think of me A.J., but I don't see why you have to be a total jerk to others.

Y'know it's kind of like giving each other slack.  I mean, A.J. may be annoying with that "funny garbage on this site" remark, but CC, my friend, don't you dare leave me here in the lurch!!!  Over a remark you didn't care for??

That's the other thing too. I'm sure A.J. was just messing with us. His previous post was a joke. We just all need to chill out.

Not quite. It's in the same swimming pool, but it's more appropriate for "adult swim time" than for tweens lookin' to ride the waterslides.

Okay. Taking the swimming pool analogy too far.

Anyway, True Blood, though a part of the same fangbanger bandwagon as Twilight, is is not QUITE of the same cloth. Twilight and Vampire Diaries would make better bedfellows. Whereas Twilight is all about abstinence, True Blood is pretty heavily into debauchery. There's guy on girl, girl on guy, guy on guy, girl on girl, girl on girl on guy, guy on girl on guy, girl on werewolf, rape, ephebophilia, beastiality (if you count werewolves), etc. Edgy sex seems to be the show's biggest selling point, with notable couplings including two vampires boinking on top of a wounded girl bleeding to death and two vampires boinking wherein the female vamp has her neck broken and turned all the way around but remains alive whilst boinking.

Gah.

Though it's just as painfully melodramatic, sappy, and romantic, True Blood is a lot more comfortable with extreme graphic sex and violence than the practically Disney-safe Twilight series. It isn't really intended to be an adult version of Twilight, though it can be compared in such a way, to a degree. True Blood is actually based on a series of books (which, from what I understand, is like Dexter the show versus Dexter the book series, in that the two are simultaneously ongoing and both diverge into drastically different, borderline unrelated animals) by Charlaine Harris, called the Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Mysteries series about a telepathic waitress who becomes embroiled in the world of the supernatural at the same time that said world is being exposed to the mainstream society at large (kind of like the Anita Blake books, in that regard).

For the record, I dislike both Twilight and True Blood and have never read or sat through an entire entry in either series. I do, however, know a few people into True Blood (thankfully, I don't know ANYONE into Twilight... but then again, I don't hang out with preteen girls very often).

PS> Also, for the record, the first Southern Vampire Mysteries book came out in 2001, whereas the first Twilight book came out in 2005. So, no, the series (at its roots, at least) is not a knockoff.

PS...again> Buffy and Angel were 282437302 times better.

Lagomorphs: menace or underutilized resource?

« Reply #11 on: June 27, 2011, 02:13:59 AM »

While I've never seen True Blood, I have read the Southern Vampire books and found them enjoyable. The first one is very nearly vampire porn: Lots of sex followed by, well, more sex. After that, Harris tones things down a bit and gets on with the storytelling. She has gotten better at structuring the series as it has developed, though the supernatural characters almost seem to outnumber the "normal" people in her version of America. It does occasionally veer into territory knee deep in romantic angst, but Harris can basically tell a good story.

This isn't the first time you've tried to be "funny" AJ and set people off.  Perhaps thinking before you post (no sarcasm intended) is something you need to consider. Maybe consider that an offbeat joke or reference may be something others may not get.

Since you've deleted your original post I have no clue what you said.  However if it set Circus off the way it did I'm sure it was irresponsible. By the way, deleting your original post won't make things better.  Nor will playing the "nobody loves me" route.

Take some time off young man.  You have the passion for the board but sometimes lack courtesy.

Circus, I've sent you a PM.

Sorry to interupt the thread.  My wife doesn't watch True Blood which surprises me.  She's into the other vampire nonsense though.

I watched the first episode during a free HBO week or something.  It seemed kind of interesting, been meaning to pick up a season on DVD and check it out.  See what develops.

Yes, my wife is a big fan, and Eric is her vampire crush, but it's not unlike a soap opera in many ways, and the obsession with it for my wife is much like that. I don't mind True Blood. The episodes are hit or miss for me. I would probably like the show more if I weren't so annoyed with the current vampire trend. I will give the show one thing, it doesn't attempt to change the vampire archetype like we have seen going on. It also has kickass opening credits.

On the other hand, True Blood observes one formula similiarity to Twilight, a central female character who is seemingly unremarkable (in this case a waitress in a small town Southern dive) whom multiple mythical creatures are competing over. This is why women are foaming at the mouth over these shows. This is a paradigm shift from the old days where the vampire had total dominance over the woman and she was essentially at his mercy. Now, the woman is in charge. Not only does she get immortal beings at her knees, but she also gets romantic chivalry in the vampire version of knights in shining armor protecting her.

There was that Oatmeal comic that's been posted a couple of times at least on this site that had a similar take on Twilight, and it's right. I haven't seen The Vampire Chronicles, but it probably follows the same formula in some way.

Anyway, True Blood is okay, but the dorky obsession does tend to annoy at times. It could be much worse.
