It's not the board game, it's the cover.  Take a nice long look at it:

Here's a surprisingly interesting post supporting the hoax idea.

DARKIES in the MELON PATCH  was a real game once-the autour of that link was merely stating that his edition was a modern copy made by mo-mo's.
Such things existed.

Well, the contention of the post by that author was that he doubted this game ever existed as what it claimed to be, rather that it was a latter-day creation by people intending to capitalize on the market for "black Americana." There's more in the comments where the author admits that he does not know if it was actually created when it is claimed it was. There's no question that the game exists, and that other examples of "Jim Crow" merchandise exist. The question is whether this game is what it claims to be.

Whether or not is legitimate (the internet being what it is, I couldn't ascertain that by searching), it is highly interesting that the market for antique relics of racism is good enough for people to sell a fake racist game as genuine. The cynicism inherent in that idea is actually much more offensive than the original game could ever have been, if it indeed did exist as claimed.

Anyway, I found the issues the conversation elicited fascinating. Very reminiscent of Philip K. Dick's discussion of "historicity" in The Man in the High Castle.

Agree.
But it was a knock of of a real game.
This country continued to produce incredibly racist  products well into the 50's-Amos and Andy anyone? I owned a picture puzzle from the 50's with black kids eating watermelon from 1952.
Great Britan was even worse. They still had minstrel shows on TV as late as the 60's.

A few years ago you could find authentic 'Whites Only' and 'Colored Only' signs in antique and junk stores in Montgomery,AL.

Maybe you still can.
