'He's really kind-hearted': Mixed-race woman to marry white supremacist murder suspect whose face is covered in swastikas
A mixed-race woman due to marry a white supremacist murder suspect has spoken out in support of her man.
Erica Herrera, who is half Hawaiian and half Hispanic, said despite prison inmate Curtis Allgier's frightening appearance - with tattoos of swastikas and the word 'skinhead' covering his face - he is 'kinder' and 'gentler' than he is publicly portrayed.
'He's a very sweet, loving…He's a really kind-hearted, good person,' she said, defending her plans to marry the man who faces the death penalty for murder.
Herrera, from Sacramento, California, plans to marry Allgier, 31, in a ceremony at the Utah State Prison in Draper on August 8.
'That's obviously not what he is if he's marrying someone that is of a different background than he is,' she said.
Allgier is accused of shooting to death prison guard Stephen Anderson, a charge to which he has plead not guilty.
Anderson, 50, was shot while escorting Allgier to a doctor's appointment at a University of Utah medical facility on June 26, 2007.
Authorities say Allgier had been unshackled before he took Anderson's gun and shot him in the head.
After a high-speed chase, he was captured within hours at a fast food restaurant a few miles away.
If convicted, Allgier faces the death penalty.
His bride-to-be, who started communicating with Allgier before the 2007 shooting, said she believes he is innocent.
If he is ever convicted, she would either divorce him or annul the marriage, she said.
The couple, who corresponded for years as friends before starting a serious relationship, will exchange vows through a glass wall at the prison.
The honeymoon will be abstinent, although Herrera said they are requesting a transfer to a state where conjugal visits are allowed.
Allgier was engaged once before while behind bars but the wedding was called off last April.
