So... remake is coming in October and I know how much all of you want to see it (I'm seeing it just cause I know no one else around here probably wants to and someone should report back about it), so let's take the time to remember the original film.

Basically, Chicago kid Ren McCormack moves into a small town where rock & roll and dancing are banned due to a local minister.  The movie that shot Kevin Bacon into stardom as I heard and had a musical based off it.  While not a critical success, it is still fondly remembered and its music as well:

I never saw the original so I'm only able to give some small information about what I know about it.  For the others who have seen it, care to jump in on what you thought about it?

There's barely anything I liked about this. The remake doesn't look like it'll be improving anything.

Always thought it was the worst of the 80s dancing flicks. I liked the soundtrack, but I much preferred Flashdance and Staying Alive. Dance movies these days are even worse, so I'm betting the remake will probably suck.

Really?!  Even worse than Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo?

This is one of those 80s "classics" I haven't seen.

Watched it 4 times last week.  Thumbup

It's stupid (aren't all dance flicks?), but the flick kinda works.
I always thought that John Lithgow was the heart of the movie. You end up kinda liking the guy despite his utterly bonker view of banning dancing.

I liked most of the music and liked the very last dance number. The rest ... meh.  As far as a Dance Movie, Saturday Night Fever is my all time favorite.

A guilty pleasure of mine and I don't really understand why they are remaking it.

I agree with you Doggett. The movie wouldn't work at all if you didn't buy into Lithgow's dance ban. He added a little extra emotional depth.

I like it just because it is one of those quintessential 80's movies. It's cheesy and fun. And it inspired one of Andy Samberg's funniest bits.
