The classic, which I just saw for the very first time.  I thought it was funny as hell.

It starts out as a fairly straightforward horror movie and quickly escalates into an over-the-top gorefest.

RE-ANIMATOR deals with Herbert West, brilliant doctor who is performing experiments involving bringing dead flesh back to life.  After an accident in Europe, he comes to the States (Miskatonic U, Massachusetts) to continue his work.  After an antagonistic meeting with the dean and the head doctor of the school, he moves in with student Dan Cain (who happens to be shtupping the dean's daughter).  Taking over the basement of the house as his lab, West finally perfects his formula for bringing back the dead.  Mishaps occur, hilarity ensues.

I think it was about the point that West re-animates the head that this goes from horror to sick comedy.

The movie is filled with great lines, such as:
"He's not insane, he's dead."
"Your father's been lobotomized."
and my favorite, "Who's going to believe a talking head?"

Let's not forget one of the most twisted sex scenes ever put to film, or the all out Zombie Battle Royale.  Definitely one of the best adaptions of H.P. Lovecraft, if not the most faithful.

The DVD, now out-of-print has two commentary tracks, one from the director and one from the cast.  There is also many deleted scenes, most taken from the footage they used in the R-rated version.  I only gave the extras a cursory look, but the cast commentary seemed entertaining.

The film was followed up by BRIDE OF THE RE-ANIMATOR, which I haven't seen yet.  IMDb also shows a listing for BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR for this year.  Anybody have any info on that?

Beyond Re-Animator is currently suffering in Development Hell.  Good thing Brian Yuzna (who produced Re-Animator and produced/directed Bride of Re-Animator) is determined to get the movie made, it's just going to take awhile.

I'm waiting for the new DVD release, then you'll probably see a review of "Re-Animator."

God I love the day-glow green mess in the syringes that's supposed to be the magic fluid, and, no, it isn't "faithful" to Lovecraft -- It's got little or nothing to do with the real Lovecraft story -- but who the hell cares?  How about when the head sighs in exasperation when the headless body is stumbling around the lab trying to find it to pick up?  Memories are made of these . . .

I'm going to have to put this movie on my "to see" list. Sounds good and Hollywood video has a copy, so maybe I'll see it soon.

"Who's going to believe a talking head?  Get a job at a sideshow."
Jeffrey Combs is the evil god of all acting.  Well, him and Bruce Campbell of course.  What more can you say about it?
