Those FACES OF DEATH tapes that were so popular in the 80's. They brought the notion of Gore Porn (or whatever it's called) right into our living rooms, family dens, and kiddie bedrooms.

I agree. Even though most were fake....it was disturbing that so many kids wanted to see people die. I think it says more of us as a people, and not blaming it on a movie. People want this s**t. Why? I dont know. You tell me.
The ad line for LAST HOUSE ON THE  LEFT WAS-"its only a movie." Im afraid that kids will want more than the movie.
Give me Dracula and Frankenstein any day..

Yeah, the big selling point of these tapes was they were supposedly REAL deaths. It was disturbing these tapes were HUGE rentals when they appeared.

I admit a friend and I rented one out of curiosity back in the 80s. The first thing my mind screamed was "THIS IS REALLY SICK!" the second was "THIS IS REALLY FAKE!".

RC, you and I are about the same age. Did you have to watch those very graphic Drivers Ed movies like I did? I think the coach who taught my class got a twisted pleasure out of making us watch those scenes of twitching, dying teenieboppers and juvie brains splatter on the road..

They were all gruesome. SOMETING WEIRD video sells em. I dont wanna buy em.
I did do acid...my kids are beautiful. I dont have Blue Sunshine weird flashbacks. The REFFER MADNESS of the 60's. Acid. Not somethig you want to do every day, Number 1-You cant. Once you trip-aint like drinking booze. You dont get higher. The paths are open.....you can only get so high on acid. Then you come down and crave orange juice. I know.
And feel very paranoid. Which may explain the Manson girls.

I just watched this one yesterday The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)  Hatred Hatred Hatred Hatred Hatred

This film is allegidily about the power of the human spirit is in reality it is movie that is gimmick driven look at the fate of a man suffering physically, emotionally and psychologically for an extended period of time. As Jean-Dominique Bauby struggles with the toll it is taking on him while lying in a hospital bed one cannot help but wonder how The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is not a horror film.

spiritually, emotionally or psychically harmful film that leaves me physically ill after watching it?
...hmm

seriously though, I'm more offended by films that ooze mediocrity, rather than ones with excessive gore/torture or scenes of moral degredation. maybe I shouldn't be? who knows.

There is a theory call "predictive programming" in which these images of bloody horror and death are used to desensitize us in order to prevent us from reacting when we see the real event unfolding in front of us. For example, most people in the past, if they were to see an individual being savagely assaulted would try to help. But nowadays they'll just stand by and gawk, probably filming it to post on youtube.

I've always wondered about this theory, and whether it can be applied to other types of images. for example if we are exposed to lots of funny images/films, do we become desensetized to funny incidents in real life? or if we watch a lot of music videos, do we then become unable to appreciate 'live' music if we go to a show? or does the desensetization process only apply to violence and gore

Magnolia (1999) - I just finished this. This movie is supposed to be about to be the power of forgiving people,  I on the othe er hand beg to differ.

There are unspeakable offensive acts committed within Magnolia done by many characters. Yet, the audience is supposed to have sympathy for them. This movie wears the audiences out not just because of the length but because of the constant running themes being beaten into the head of those watching the film.

There are two saving graces in this film: the two noble people in Magnolia who are just trying to do the right thing with no ulterior motives and the acting which is outstanding. However, that is not enough to save Magnolia. To be blunt Magnolia sucks and is one of the worst movies ever made.

I have to admit, I've never been much of a "Saw" fan. I thought "Hostel" was far superior at doing this kind of thing, although it might not be as creative. I had always wanted to see "Maniac" because I liked the poster, but once I saw it, I was so dissapointed in it, even though I loved Savini's EFX. It's a great EFX movie but so weak on story. I kind of got the same vibe from "Basket Case."

Problem child: The entire thing is built around a nice guy trying to help out an orphan,Sure Ritter messes up bit here and there but "Junior" cares not he relentlessly destroys everything all while sporting a s**t ating grin begging the veiwer to grab him by the throat.

Ritter's character attempts ot be the loving father but if you ask me if junior was my responsibility I might drown him. The real kicker is somehow we are supposed to sympathize with junior after he's caused thousands in damage, mental stress, and in some cases attempted murder,But...DAAAAAW look he learned a lesson,I guess all is forgiven,BS.

There would be a total of 3 of these movies all witht he same plot. All envoking the same rage from me.
