Hi there!

Quote
ATLANTA (AP) — Minutes before he was put to death, Troy Davis asked his supporters to "continue to fight this fight" — but will they, and how?

The Georgia inmate's case outraged hundreds of thousands of people around the world who found the evidence against him weak, and opponents of the death penalty hope their anger provokes a backlash against capital punishment. Some activists say a fitting legacy of the case would be laws that bar death sentences for those, like Davis, whose convictions are based on eyewitness testimony.

The Answer is that there is no excuse for this s**t, this is to me looking like that the judges are racist IMO

I'm against the death penalty, but the Supreme Court is not racist.

They almost never overturn death penalty convictions.  Before the case goes to the Supreme Court the sentence has already been reviewed and upheld by the State Supreme Court.  Appealing to the US Supreme Court is almost a Hail Mary tactic.

In 2005 they did overturn a capital conviction in Texas because they concluded the Texas judicial system stacked the jury with white jurors in order to convict a black man.  There have been several similar cases.

Even if the US Supreme Court reverses a conviction, there's almost always a new trial, and about 75% of the time the defendant is sentenced to life imprisonment instead of death.

I am not qualified to comment here, since I have not read anything but today's article on this case.  But the man had multiple appeals, and all were denied.  His attorneys certainly did a good job building public support, but apparently they had nothing that would sway a judge.

If the man was guilty, the penalty was merited.
If he was not, shame on our system.

I will say the witness recantations seem specious...  IIRC, one of the people who supposedly recanted was dead at the time.  Nothing seems that off about the jury verdict.

In any case, I find it strange the death penalty was applied in this case because it seems to have been a rash unplanned murder without special circumstances.  That makes it second degree murder, which generally doesn't get you death.  Seems odd to me.  Personally, I think significant corroborative physical evidence should be required for death penalty cases, but I'm not so sure under the standards at the time of his conviction or at his execution anything that could be called a miscarriage of the justice system occurred.

I've lost most of my faith in the Supreme Court over the years. A number of their decisions have left me shaking my head or actually cursing them aloud.
