Among these statements are lies and truths, and the truths may be the more spectacular of the two.

I have never had a speeding ticket.

The writer John Updike was a personal friend.

I have won 75% of my tennis matches.

On October 24, 1994, when I was fifteen, I nearly died. I experienced no white light, no sense of being disembodied, and emerged questioning the existence of any afterlife, despite the claims of my religious upbringing. (It also wrecked my tennis career….)

The man with whom I have had the longest involvement in my life had a grandfather so famous Jay Leno delivered a video eulogy at his memorial service.

At age eight I was nearly a background extra in the “toothpick” scene from Rainman. I was a very minor extra in a hallway scene in another movie in 1993.

I have never used recreational drugs.

For much of my life I was a second-generation employee of the Central Intelligence Agency. My first work involved living near Macclesfield, England, in an assignment aimed at ferreting out sleeper agents of the Irish Republican Army, making use of my (actual) background as an American with dual Irish citizenship. I was coached on how to be perceived as young, idealistic, naïve, pro-Republican, socially-liberal, malleable, and a good listener. Then I was to report information back on an ongoing basis. Very low key, no cloak and dagger, just being in the right places at the right times. I was regarded as successful in that assignment. Later I was more deeply involved with agency kidnap squads called “Movers”. For this I was frequently used as bait in social situations. We took mostly relatives of desired individuals, who were then used as leverage. I have mixed feelings about some of the work we did “Moving”.  I am no longer a government employee.

For my thirty-third birthday party last month, I invited a woman who during the 1970s was my paternal grandfather’s mistress for almost seven years.

I graduated ninth in a high school class of 180.

I am part owner of an art gallery.

Because I wanted to be a size two, I used to starve myself, once going four days without eating and consuming about 500 calories a day when I did. I tried to be perfect in my grades, my behavior, my tennis game, even in the way I’d genuflect during daily Mass at school. Outwardly I was seen as an overachiever. Inside my self image was a mess. I knew I’d never be as beautiful as my mom, as smart as my dad, or could ever make up for my two brothers who died. I got way too close to one of my teachers. A man who still teaches to this day and basically should be shot. My teen years were definitely Strum und Drang.

I LOVE cats!

I can’t pass a panhandler without giving that person money.

One of the most terrifying things ever said to me was: “I hope you get what you deserve in this life.” (The person who said it meant it in a nice way….)

In Cambridge, Mass back in the 90s, I visited an old blind man, regionally famous, who every Friday recited the Koran from memory in front of anyone who cared to show up.

In college my boyfriend took me whale watching and I was shocked at how amazingly bad whales stank of rotten fish.

I have kept a diary since 1988.

An MRI recently determined that a longtime hearing loss in my right ear is related to the presence of a small tumor in my brain. A course of drug therapy has been suggested instead of surgery. If it is successful in shrinking the tumor, I should be able to live out a normal life span. If not, I might be dead within twenty-four months.

I am currently trying to hire Ann Druyan to come talk at the annual gathering of the partners at my aunt’s law firm. I cannot wait to meet the woman who used to sleep with Carl Sagan.

Last time I tried I could still run a 5 ½ minute mile.

This is my last visit to this site. Thanks for having me here. May you all get what you deserve in this life.

Dunno about the rest of it - and I've known you for years - but I SINCERELY hope the last bit was one of the lies!!!!!!  I've always enjoyed having your input here.

I won't press for answers, but what an interesting list!

On a positive note: I certainly hope the CIA one and the art gallery one are true [both are interesting, in particular of course the CIA, boy would I like to hear some of those stories]

On the negative side I'll reiterate what the others have already said: I certainly hope they're not true but know that if they are there's an incredible support network of friends here for you if you require it.

I listen to the Adam Carolla podcast quite a bit. One of his regular support cast, going by the moniker Bald Brian, has a tumor like you speak of. He went through a drug therapy that sounds like what you're talking about. They talk about it on the show once in a great while. Anyway, his story was very similar to yours that I too hope is a lie, a brain tumor, given a year or so to live, etc. He went on the therapy, which he described was supposed to either stop the growth, which would be considered a success, or, in some cases even shrink it. Two years later he is doing well and the tumor is indeed shrinking, the doctors saying that it was a very successful treatment.

This treatment, if it is the same as the one you are referring to, is pretty new. If it were ten years ago, this option wouldn't even be available.

In any case, as stated by Jase, I too hope that item is one of the lies, but if it is not, I hope for the same success story.

If it's true what they say, that GOD created us in His image, then why should we not love creating, and why should we not continue to do so, as carefully and ethically as we can, on whatever scale we're capable of?

The choice is simple; refuse to create, and refuse to grow, or build, with care and love.

I've known ER for years, and I imagine the post is exactly what she said - a mixture of truth and lies!  But I did gather from my last Email exchange with her that she will be back at some point.  We've corresponded for years, and she is a fascinating person!
