A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: January 13, 2012, 09:51:14 PM »

I kinda wanted to post this in Flick's political thread, but it doesn't directly relate to the upcoming election, and he already stated that he did not want his thread to turn into a policy debate.  BUT, for those of you who insist that there is NO difference between the two parties, this is instructive, even if obviously biased - the math is still valid!

Do you remember January 3, 2007??

This is just a History lesson.  I am sending it to all regardless of party . I bet I know who wouldn't read it -- those afraid of the truth. It is history and nothing can change it.

The day the Democrats took over was not January 22nd 2009, it was actuallyJanuary 3rd 2007, the day the Democrats took over the House of Representatives and the Senate, at the very start of the 110th Congress.

The Democratic Party controlled a majority in both chambers for the first time since the end of the 103rd Congress in 1995.

For those who are listening to the liberals propagating the fallacy that everything is "Bush's Fault", think about this:
January 3rd, 2007, the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress:
The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77
The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%
The Unemployment rate was 4.6%
George Bush's Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB CREATION!

Remember that day...
January 3rd, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee.
The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy?
BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!
THANK YOU DEMOCRATS (especially Barney ) for taking us from 13,000 DOW, 3.5 GDP and 4.6% Unemployment...to this CRISIS by (among MANY other things) dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac FIASCOES!
(BTW: Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie -starting in 2001 because it was financially risky for the US economy). Barney blocked it and called it a "Chicken Little Philosophy" (and the sky did fall!)
And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac? OBAMA
And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie?
OBAMA and the Democrat Congress, especially BARNEY!!!!

So when someone tries to blame Bush...
REMEMBER JANUARY 3rd, 2007.... THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!"
Bush may have been in the car but the Democrats were in charge of the gas pedal and steering wheel they were driving the economy into the ditch.
Budgets do not come from the White House.. They come from Congress and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democratic Party.
Furthermore, the Democrats controlled the budget process for 2008 & 2009 as well as 2010 & 2011.

In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.

For 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the 2009 budget.

And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete 2009. Let's remember what the deficits looked like during that period:
If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets.

If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself.
In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is "I inherited a deficit that I voted for,
and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th."
There is no way this will be widely publicized, unless each of us sends it on!

"The problems we face today exist because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by those who vote for a living."

I never said there was no difference between the two parties. I've always said that they represent the yin and yang of statism. What one party doesn't want to control, the other party does.

Together, they're strangling the f**k out of me.

Hou make a valid point.  I've always said the difference between the two has boiled down to slowly walking towards socialism and running at it flat out!

Wow. There is no way in hell I would forward such a thing. I have this strange tendency to NOT forward anything strongly partisan, because if there's one thing that can be counted on in partisan ranting, it's that only one side will be represented.

I'm not researching every one of your claims, because I already know that enough of what you have said is accurate based on my own memory that I don't see the need. The points are taken and valid.

But, being the non-partisan (of either of the two big parties anyway) person that I am, I will always look at both sides. Consider me the Leon Uris of amateur political analysts.

Consider for a moment defense spending. Take it from a veteran, the amount of wasteful spending I saw in my own department alone was apalling, and this goes on across all branches and all entities. In other words, they are no different than any other wasteful government agency.

Consider the following 2010 federal spending budget.

The pro-military Republicans would like us to believe that defense spending only accounts for 20% of federal spending, about $689 billion, as if 20% were a small piece of the pie to begin with. When one actually investigates, this percentage does not represent close to the total of military-related spending. This number, $684 billion, takes into account: operations and maintenance; military personnel; procurement; research, development, testing & evaluation; military construction; family housing. Sounds like a nice complete list, right? This list comprises everything under the umbrella of the Department of Defense.

The remaining costs of military spending get hidden in the categories of "Discretionary" and "Other Mandatory." Here is a list of military spending that IS NOT represented by that 20%:

Nuclear weapons research and related costs: This falls under the Deparment of Energy, and I wasn't able to find a reliable number in the 2010 budget.
Veterans Affairs: they fall under their own department and account for about $56 billion of the 2010 budget.
Pensions to military retirees, widows, and families: This gets hidden under Department of Treasury, and certainly a military cost. Again, I was unable to find a reliable number from a reputable source.
Interest on debt from past wars: This number is massive. I couldn't find a reliable 2010 number, but it falls somewhere between $100 billion and $400 billion. That's the range and it's been difficult to find a real number. Let's err on the low side and say $200 billion, just so nobody can accuse me of trying to pad the numbers. If somebody has a reliable number I would welcome seeing the source. I recognize that this does not represent spending decisions by administrations, but it does demonstrate the cost of war that lasts generations, and cannot be dismissed as non-military-related spending.
State Department financing of foreign arms sales and militarily-related development assistance: Good luck finding that number. I don't suspect it would be a particularly big one comparatively, so I don't see a tremendous impact here.
Department of Homeland Security: This 2010 number, about $43 billion, is easily arguably a non-military expense. However, I include it as an example of a War on Terror expense that tends to be widely supported by Republicans.
FBI Counter-terrorism spending: Another "good luck with that one" number. Likely not a tremendous expense, but another example of how "War on Terror" expenses get hidden.
NASA Intelligence-gathering spending: NASA has always had close ties to the military, particular in the area of intel-gathering. However, the entire 2010 budget for NASA was around $19 billion, a small number comparatively, and we don't know how much of that was tied to military interests, so there's no reliable way I can find to factor it in.

Given the lack of reliable info in some areas, this brings the cost of military spending to about $988 billion, and this is a very conservative number given missing information. This number can easily be rounded up to a cool trillion and, I would highly suspect, still not be enough to reflect the real number of military dollars spent. So let's just call it $1 trillion. Now we are at about 29% of federal spending, all of which is fully supported spending by the Republican rank and file.

Take into account that Republicans are not against ALL of the rest of government spending. They too support some of it, but certainly less than is supported by the Democrats. However, if one considers that the Republican side of the house is at least responsible for some of the rest of the 2010 budget, one can see that the responsibility for the budget burden quickly approaches about 50/50. I don't doubt that the lions share goes to the Democrats. In fact if I were betting on it I would bet it went to the Dem side, certainly.

However, this is just another attempt by a partisan person to say "it's not our fault." Yes it is. You are responsible too. Are the Dems a little more? Maybe.

I don't care much how this post makes me appear. Most of the time I am railing against conservative republican political posturing on this forum. Believe me, if I were on a site that was predominantly liberal, I would probably garner a good deal of seething, far more than anything every experienced here. My main posture in life is to represent the information that highly biased people ignore. You always say that EVERYBODY is biased. This is true. What you don't say is that there are different kinds and levels of bias. When I see a heavy bias, it is always transparent, and always easy to find information not represented by the poster, as heavily biased people will invariably seek out only the information that supports their agenda and ignore the information that does not.
