Russian scientists will soon explore a huge lake that has been hidden beneath Antarctica for millions and millions of years.

Hopefully Putin won't immediately jump in to plant a Russian flag on the bottom and to wrestle the prehistoric beasties who no doubt live in the lake.

I find it fasinating how something that big can remain hidden for so long

The Russian researchers have insisted the bore would only slightly touch the lake's surface and that a surge in pressure will send the water rushing up the shaft where it will freeze, immediately sealing out the toxic chemicals.

I'm guessing some Russkie scientist is about to get a faceful of Slurpee zombie virus.

It was bound to happen sooner or later.

Russian scientists have reached the surface of a gigantic freshwater lake hidden under miles of ice for some 20 million years — a lake that may hold life from the distant past and clues to the search for life on other planets.
That already sounds like the voice over in an old fashioned style trailer.  Go ahead and say it in your dramatic voice-over guy voice.

I vote for alien space wreckage.

We won't hear from them for many months, and then we'll find out the whole affair went all "The Thing" on them. It's really unfortunate that flamethrowers aren't standard equipment on most scientific expeditions.

Aren't they the least bit concerned they might bring up a prehistoric virus that nobody's immune to?
