Not sure what compelled me to buy this today. I hated the 70s original and the first remake was deeply flawed, having some of the most clichéd examples of redneck bad guys I've ever seen, despite the lead actress doing well with her character

This time the bad guys are Bulgarians, they're considerably more believable, but the acting all round is about 5/10

The rape scene(s) are really not nice to watch (well duh). I asked myself why am I watching this. I'm bored, was the answer.

The problem with this is the completely impossible way the heroine manages to exact revenge on about 6 people in the space of about 20 minutes, despite having just gone through an ordeal that should've left her either dead or too traumatised to move. How did she know where they all would be, and how did she round them all up?

anyway that's that.

I do agree RC. new ones like this and hostel etc., the so called 'torture porn' genre, they're very artless pieces of work. They might have amazing CGI gore but there is no 'fun' or scares or enjoyment

I actually think Last House On The Left is quite fun tbh. Yeah it's uncomfortable too but the the corny songs, the over the top craziness of the bad guys makes it entertaining. The re-make of Last House On The Left removed all that stuff and was just a hollow, if well made, movie

We don't like fun any more it seems

true... and I think it's fair to say the 'shock value' has disappeared now, once you see 2 or 3 you've basically seen them all. unless someone knows otherwise? I'm not an expert on this stuff but I get that impression anyway...

Not a fan of the genre as a whole, but I will say that the very first SAW flick was brilliant.
I never saw the end coming, and when it did come, I was left stunned and breathless by it.

fair enough. I've never actually watched the first Saw movie, in fact the only one I've seen is part 5 for some reason

also, not sure if they really fit in this same category but I quite like the Final Destination movies tbh. They're still a bit rubbish but somehow pretty entertaining IMO

I'm not against gore-I mean-RE-ANIMATOR,the GATES OF HELL,...even the first LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT a a certain panache. But it seems this "torture porn" is trying to shock-but it just disgusts-and when you get beyond that-it's boring-vapid. Theirs no reason to watch 2 hours of torture.
And when it comes to I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE-prolonged rape. Ugh.

First saw is worth a watch.  Worth noting there's actually surprisingly little on screen gore in it - it's mostly left to the imagination.  Later movies contrast this pretty strongly.  Also, Tobin Bell is excellent in the first three saw films.  I haven't seen the latter ones.  Even if you think the movies suck, I think he's probably the only great franchise horror villain we've had come out in the past 20 years.

The thing is, two different people I know (and who I share similar taste in movies to, but they don't know each other) both told me they fell asleep watching the first Saw in the cinema. So I've always avoided checking it out, on that basis. But I value the opinion of badmovie-ers so if I do get a chance then I will watch it - Just so I can say I've seen it, if anything. It's one of those horrors that seems to have embedded itself in popular culture, like Friday 13th, Nightmare On Elm St. etc...

Ah damn...now I'm back feeling like don't want to watch it  TeddyR
