late 80s/early 90s.... cop has to pretend to be a student at a highschool in america in order to solve a crime involving a student (I think)...

2 scenes I remember:

1 - cop is the 'new student' at school and when he's sat in class the teacher tells him to take his baseball cap off, revealing that he is balding, and too old to be a student, which causes a slightly tense scene

2 - a different cop is sat in his car behind one of the bad guys, in stealth mode, but suddenly his CB radio goes off really loud and the bad guy hears it. .think this might be one of the first scenes in the film

tried a few of different searches on amazon and imdb for this and can't seem to find it...

The first movie that came to mind is Plain Clothes (1988), but the balding part does not fit with this one as Arliss Howard's character of Nick fits in well, appearance wise, with the high schoolers.

The same time period as Plain Clothes, though I've not seen it, that I can remember, the guy on the video cover, whom I presume is playing the cop in question, seems to me to be a stretch passing off as  high school student, and with a receding hairline.

Under Cover (1987)

yeah, reading those imdb reviews I'm prettty sure that's the one, thanks  Thumbup

I was convinced the title had "school" in it for some reason.

Plain Clothes! I remember that one, with Arliss Howard, who played "cowboy" in Full Metal Jacket. That movie was great 80's cheese. It was part of that whole 80's trend of "undercover" flicks like Just One of the Guys and Hiding Out. This one gets bonus points for having a guy trying to pass himself off as a teenager when he looks older than half the faculty!
