Has anyone noticed a glitch on the _A Nightmare on Elm Street_ (part 1) DVD? In the scene where Nancy's mother takes her into the basement to tell her the story of how the town parents killed Freddy, I notice the video freeze on a frame as the mother reaches into the furnace to pull out Freddy's claw. More specifically, it happens a little before 57:28. The freeze lasts for a little less than a second, so I think it's fairly noticeable. It happened on every player I tried it on. Does anyone else have this problem, or do I have a bad copy? If it makes a difference, I have the version that came with the box set collection.

If this is from the boxed set I've never had this problem.

That's the layer change.  You've heard of most DVDs these days being "dual layer".  The first crop of discs only had one layer per side -  about an hour's worth of info could fit on that.  By devising a way to place two layers on one side of a disc, we are saved the tedium of walking across the room to flip the disc over (or insert a second one).

Whether or not the player chokes on a layer change seems to shift with the player and the disc - for instance, I get similar glitches on my copy of "The Mummy" and a few others, but "House on Haunted Hill" only seems to freeze every other time it's played.  Most of my collection plays through without a bump.

I own the NOES DVD (the stand-alone; the box set seems rather wasteful) and I've noticed this too. The same glitch can also be seen on The Matrix twice (being longer than 2 hours), most noticeably when Neo spits blood out during the fight with Smith. Why must we be tortured so?! We get unbelievably clear image and sound with tons of extras on a format that will never wear out, yet we must be put through the agony of 1/16 of a second of freeze! Back to the NOES DVD, though. I'm pretty steamed at New Line for taking a lot of the extras off just to slap them on the box set. i don't want parts 2-7, just the original classic. Greedy, greedy.

Have yo guys tried cleaning your DVD player? My disks tend to act up if I forget to clean the player on a regular basis.

You may want to contact the company who made the DVD because they may replace the DVD.  This is what happen to us with the TRON DVD.  It may not be DVD player it could the DVD itself.

My husband ( John Morgan) bought TRON on DVD, but it would not play on the playstation 2.  We bought a copy and about half way through the screen turns green with a bunch of squares dots.  We exchanged the DVD for another copy of Tron but the same thing happened. We knew it was not our DVD player.

I had registered the TRON DVD on line at http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/. You must register your TRON DVD with Disney in order to get any help.

I went to the technical support online and explained what was happening with the TRON DVD. A few weeks later to our surprise we got a replacement TRON DVD in the mail and this DVD work in the playstation 2. We were surprised that Disney sent a replacement DVD, but you have to send the old DVD back to them.

Thank you all for the replies. I was aware of the layer change issue with DVDs, but I always thought that problem was solved by now and that it never really happened unless you own an old or shoddy player, as I have never experienced it before. I guess it does vary from disk to disk as well as from player to player, Dr. Freex. I'm a little more at ease that I don't own a bad copy.

I can't believe you people are annoyed by that.  i don't know why Nightmare has it as it isn't that long - they can easily fit two hours on a single layer (anyone seen the The Stand DVD?  Like over 8 hours + commentaries on a dual layer double sided disc).  Though it's true darker movies do need a somewhat higher average bitrate.  I guess if it has a couple commentarys I guess that might push it over.  Just remember that there has NEVER been a format without a periodic change of some sort.  VHS has to be two tape if it's longer then about two hours.  LDs it was every 60 minutes or in CAV LDs every 30.
