Quite true. People no longer have to think about what they put out there for others to read. A mere 20 years ago, if you read something you didn't like, you'd have to feel strongly enough about it to write a letter and mail it, then wait for it to be published. Gave people a chance to cool off, pick their battles, and maybe put a little more thought into what they say if they do care enough to write.
Now, you see something and you can throw your first gut reaction out there immediately. Plus, since it's mostly read by strangers, and you can conceal your identity anyway, there just isn't the sense of responsibility for your words. Printed letters to the editor require a return address and usually a phone number, and an editor will call to confirm that you sent it and wish it to be published, and they will take a serious look at anything that might be incorrect or potentially libelous. On the internet, you just anonymously spout whatever springs to mind and move on to the next page.
