Went to see ICE AGE 4: CONTINENTAL DRIFT this afternoon and caught the trailer for next year's Blue Sky Studios entry EPIC: THE MOVIE.

Blue Sky remains king of CGI lighting.  Early in the Blue Sky success, I heard Chris Wedge emphasize the importance of lighting to their projects, and they apparently remain dedicated to that art.  Pixar has the story department, Dreamworks has physiological 'realism,' and Blue Sky, hands down, nails the light.

This movie looks visually stunning - absolutely stunning.  Look for the subtle nuance in lighting (like fall-off across the eyes in close-ups as but one example I noticed).

For me, story tops everything else, which is probably why I am so fond of Pixar.

As for Dreamworks, they have recently obtained all rights to the characters Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Katzenberg is talking about doing a Rocky and Bullwinkle movie. We have already had a "The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle," which was a combination of animation and live action, and which died at the box office, but I presume the movie from Dreamworks will be all CGI animation. The only question is whether they can come up with a story to approximate the TV series "The Bullwinkle Show."

Stay tuned, as further details become known.

not to belittle the level of expertise involved in creating it, obviously. not my ting though...
