I watched the movie on TV in the late 70's or early 80's but it was old even then (maybe 30's, 40's or 50's). It was B&W but it had sound. The majority of the movie was set in a garden at an estate where a young girl lived. I remember her sitting in a bench under a tree. There was an old man who either sat on the bench with her or sat in the tree. Mostly he was telling a story or stories. Something about the tree or garden was "magical" such that, if the old man left the tree or garden he would die. Maybe he was a ghost. He was kind and interested in helping the young girl in some way.

Unfortunately, I just remember the one scene. There may have been cutaways to accompany the stories being told. Also, I might have it mixed up regarding who was in the tree if anybody was.

I have been trying to remember this movie for years because I wanted my daughter to watch it. Now, I want her daughter to watch it.

Please help...

Thanks

It sounds alot like ON BORROWED TIME (1939)-except it wasnt   a young  girl-it was a boy.
