Trying to remember name of old film. Please help

A few years ago I watched a black and white movie on tv that was great but I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called or even very much detail. What I do remember was that it was an older movie and featured scientists-the two main characters were a man and a women. In one of the scenes they were at a party and for some reason they could not fall asleep or they would die. I believe one of their colleagues did fall asleep and die.  I do not remember the ending but I do remember there was an unexpected twist. Any help you all can provide would be greatly appreciated as this is something I think about at least once a week for the past year or two.

Perhaps he's thinking of the "dinner party" where the four of the principles first learn of the alien invasion...?

There is an old black and white movie, in Spanish, called The Exterminating Angel, where it has people at a party that cannot fall asleep....they also cannot leave the house/room they are in.  Not scientists though....it's the only thing I can think of. Directed by Luis Bunuel.
