The Republican party of LINCOLN's era was very different from what we know the party as representing today (good and bad).  I agree, Indy: LINCOLN was our greatest President.  I am looking forward to seeing this film over the Christmas holiday.
Yea the Republicans had Jim Crow, KKK, Bull Connor, George Wallace, Orval Faubus ... wait no that was the Democrats, sorry my bad.
I haven't seen Lincoln yet - I'll likely wait for the DVD or catch it streaming.
And today it'd be the Republicans.   Twirling  Like I wrote, "...very different..."
No matter how long I stay gone you just refuse to educate yourself - government dependency is modern slavery. Which party works to keep people on the dole?
I don't see your point.  Educate yourself.  Again I assert to you: I'm not a democrat and not an apologist.  More to the point, we've all tacitly agreed to avoid politics on this forum.  No one's interested in your talking points.  Get off the politics.  Capiche?

I never agreed to anything and you made the opening political comment. Get off the hypocrisy, capiche?

No I didn't.  I made an historical observation.  I won't argue politics here anymore and urge you to do likewise.

I have read many of the descriptions of Lincoln from men who knew him - his penchant for storytelling that drove his cabinet to distraction -

This brings to mind my favorite part of the film, where everyone is deep in debate over the passing of the 13th Amendment, and Lincoln walks in to calm everyone's nerves with "another one of his damned stories", this one about Ethan Allen and his trip to England...

Quote
Abraham Lincoln: It was right after the revolution, right after peace had been concluded. And Ethan Allen went to London to help our new country conduct its business with the king. The English sneered at how rough we are and rude and simple-minded and on like that, everywhere he went. Til one day he was invited to the townhouse of a great English lord. Dinner was served, beverages imbibed, time passed as happens and Mr. Allen found he needed the privy. He was grateful to be directed to this. Relieved, you might say. Mr. Allen discovered on entering the water closet that the only decoration therein was a portrait of George Washington.

Ethan Allen done what he came to do and returned to the drawing room. His host and the others were disappointed when he didn't mention Washington's portrait. And finally his lordship couldn't resist and asked Mr. Allen had he noticed it. The picture of Washington.

He had.

Well what did he think of its placement? Did it seem appropriately located to Mr. Allen? And Mr. Allen said it did. The host was astounded. "Appropriate? George Washington's likeness in a water closet?"

"Yes," said Mr. Allen, "where it will do good service. The world knows nothing will make an Englishman s**t quicker than the sight of George Washington." I love that story.

I love that story too!  BounceGiggle

When my son gets older, this will be one of the films that I'm going to use to help educate him a bit better than the schools undoubtedly will fail to do about our most important Americans in history. Well...that and educate him in the art of good movies...and bad ones too, of course!  Cheers

Thought this was a great movie and I learned a lot of things about Lincoln that I didn't know previously.

You ought to read TEAM OF RIVALS, the book it is based on.  I have read about twenty or thirty Lincoln biographies, and it is far and away the best.
