Deserted island with little cannibal people

I tried every search term possible but I can't find the name of this movie!! What I remember:

- a group of people (men and women) arrive on a deserted island (by choice or not)
- one of the men stays behind on the beach (wounded?). when the others come back, only his skeleton is there and they wonder what could have done this.
- later they find out there are little people on the island (not even a foot tall I believe), they can't talk English (maybe their own language?) but they say "shhhh!" when they're about to attack
- the little people all wear a red shirt and all have black hair
- near the end of the movie the humans see the little people worshiping some statue. I believe they purposely went into "enemy territory" to get something for the boat or to stop the little people
- made somewhere between 1970 -1995
