TOP 10 WEIRD MOVIES OF 2012

TOP 10 MAINSTREAM MOVIES OF 2012

HOLY MOTORS (2012): "In between a very weird prologue featuring director Carax as a man living in a secret room behind a cinema where shadowy beasts prowl the aisles, and very weird epilogue featuring chauffeuse Edith Scob and a parking lot full of telepathic limousines, Lavant (presumably) plays ten different rolesónine 'assignments' and his base character of 'Mr. Oscar.'"

CHAPLIN'S THE CIRCUS (1928): "The Circus emerges as a flawed, unique work of art, with the bleakest ending of all Chaplinís features."-AE

"The best parts are watching Sly go through the full range of emotions: deadpan, deadpan with raised eyebrow, deadpan with quivering lip. There's also a great sequence where Sly drives his VW Beetle down the interstate for about 20 minutes, staring dramatically through the windshield.."-Joe Bob on A MAN CALLED RAMBO

LOST HIGHWAY (1997): Certified Weird!  "In Lost Highway and after, Lynch is still concerned with exposing the rotteness of the id and the soulís foul attraction to beautiful evils, but now he explores the theme through an examination of the malleability of identity."

HORROR EXPRESS (1972): "On the face of it, the basic plotóa frozen prehistoric creature comes back to life and causes mayhemóhas been used so often that itís not even unusual, let alone weird. But when the mix also includes an extraterrestrial energy being who may or not be the Devil, a mad monk who is Rasputin in all but name, explicit brain autopsies, Cossack zombies with boiled eyeballs, 'scientific' explanations that make the ones in Plan Nine From Outer Space sound like Carl Sagan, and the overall logic of a fever-dream, weirdness definitely starts to creep in."-OB

CHAPLIN AT FIRST NATIONAL: "Chaplinís disguise as a tree on the war front (predating Bugs Bunny), is surrealistic and bizarrely funny." -AE

16TH ANNUAL ONLINE FILM CRITICS SOCIETY AWARDS (WITH OUR VOTES AND COMMENTS): "Personally, I would have voted for Beasts of the Southern Wild as Best Picture, had it been nominated. It takes far more chances than Argo, and while itís not perfect, Iíll take a great but flawed performance with a high degree of difficulty over a perfect rendition of a standard routine any day."

LISZTOMANIA (1975): Certified Weird! "At times, itís the biography of Franz Liszt if it were directed by Benny Hill working from a script by Federico Fellini. With Nazi golems, Richard Wagner as a vampire, a climax aboard a heavenly spaceship, and a giant phallic musical number, this phantasmagorical biopic is Ken Russell at his ebullient silliest."

7 WOMEN (1966): "Leighton, who seems to be doing a Katharine Hepburn impression (Hepburn, in fact, turned the part down), appears to be playing a repressed lesbian, as in the scene where, practically trembling with anxiety, she watches the half-dressed Emma (Lyon, of Lolita fame) primping in the mirror, and tentatively helps brush her hair."-SS

CHAPLIN AT FIRST NATIONAL, PART 2: "The Pilgrim is short on Chaplin's trademark sentiment and admirably long on licentious parody."-AE

THE FINAL PROGRAMME [AKA THE LAST DAYS OF MAN ON EARTH] (1973): "And so we come to that notorious ending... Jerry Cornelius merges with Miss Brunner to become the Perfect (Girly) Man, who for some reason is a cross between Charles Atlas and King Kong. I donít think this is meant to be funny, but it is, for all the wrong reasons."-OB

THE HOURGLASS SANITORIUM (1973): " Surreal and dream-like, this is probably one of the most artistically successful films of its type---a picturesque journey into death."-LRH

TEOREMA (1968): "True to its name, Teorema (Italian for 'theorem') is a dry theoretical film thatís more interesting to discuss afterwards than it is fun to watch."

THE KID (1921): "The Tramp gets his wings and, it turns out, heavenís not that different from the earthly realm. Temptation arrives in the form of 12-year old Lita Grey, whom Chaplin would marry and bitterly divorce in real life... Jealousy leads to a brawl and celestial murder."-AE

THE ISLE (2000): "Evoking the mysterious power of mutually destructive attraction, The Isle is a movie that just might get its hooks in youóalthough hopefully not as literally as it gets its hooks inside its characters."

TWO-LANE BLACKTOP (1971): "The performance of James Taylor, better known for singing than acting, sometimes transcends wooden and goes all the way to metallic; but in fairness to him, this is exactly how the characterís meant to come across, so maybe heís a superb actor."-OB

ALPS (2011): "If you want to know what itís like to feel suicidal in Eastern Europe today, try watching a triple feature of the New Weird Greek canon: start with Dogtooth, follow up with Attenberg (starring Labed as an alienated, asexual woman with a dying dad), and use this one as the final nail in the coffin."

"THE BOOK OF DALLAS" (2012): "Yes, God is a girl who likes to eat lots of waffles. I knew it all along."-AE
