Giggling teen flips judge the bird, judge not amused

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/giggling-woman-flips-judge-bird-judge-not-amused-210739814.html

Never mess with people who have the power to make your life miserable. That includes DMV employees, waiters and baggage handlers. And judges. Especially them.

A Miami woman facing drug charges made her situation much worse when she laughed at and then flipped off the man with the gavel. File this case under: Ill advised.

According to NBC Miami, 18-year-old Penelope Soto was in court for charges relating to possession of Xanax, a prescription drug. Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat was in the process of setting her bond. He asked Soto about the value of her jewelry. Soto laughed. That was strike one.

"It's not a joke, you know, we're not in a club now," Rodriguez-Chomat said. "We are not in a club. Be serious about it."

Soto replied: "I'm serious about it, you just made me laugh. You just made me laugh, I apologize. It's worth a lot of money."

The judge said, "Like what?" Soto compared the jewelry to a wealthy rapper. She replied that the jewelry is "like Rick Ross. It's worth money."

The perplexed judge asked if Soto had taken drugs within the past 24 hours, to which she answer, "Actually, no." The judge then set Soto's bond at $5,000 and said, "Bye-bye." Soto chuckled and said, "Adios." Strike two. The judge summoned her back and raised the bond to $10,000, eliciting gasps from those in the courtroom.

Soto asked if the judge was serious. Judges are not known for their humor, and Rodriguez-Chomat is no exception. "I am serious," he said. "Adios."

But Soto wasn't done. Instead of leaving the courtroom she flipped Rodriguez-Chomat the bird and said "F*** you." And that was strike three. Soto was again called back and then sentenced to thirty days in the big house for contempt of court.

Awesome.

The only thing that would make that clip perfect would be if you heard Nelson from "The Simpsons" laughing as the judge sentences her to thirty days. "HA-ha!"

I liked that.

The only judge I've ever come across is a high court judge in Pretoria who like this judge, wasn't known as a humorous type. In the run up to the Soccer World Cup 2010, he met with his colleagues to discuss the issue of them wearing the national soccer team (known as the Bafana Bafana) jersey on Fridays and he was quoted, while wearing his robes, as saying that "Unfortunately, during this historical time, the decision of the court stands and that decision is....."

Then he took his robe off, revealing a Bafana Bafana jersey!!  Cheers

I've been in court with a bunch of judges.  They run the full spectrum from tight, humorless controlled formality to pretty laid back.

I remember one in particular, a Federal Court judge if memory serves, that when an attorney would "Object" and the objection was "Sustained," rather than saying "Sustained" or some other more formal comment, he threw his arms over his head and said, "TOUCHDOWN!"

I've also been in Federal Court where the two co-defendants (in a combined trial) sat and talked to themselves throughout the entire proceedings. That particular judge was not amused...at all.  But, he was patient with letting them know...til sentencing.  (They likely would have gotten what they got anyway).  30 years in Federal Pen, no parole, is no laughing matter.  I don't recall them being quite so "social" leaving the courtroom.

As for the teen story?  That kind of thing happens more often than one would think.  It's not really "news."  But...oh wait.  Yep.  Yahoo.

Really?  No, it's not news, which is why it's posted in WEIRD NEWS STORIES and any of us who move in our world know full well that persons of any age can be rude, stupid, asinine.

Another Florida teen caught with Xanax. Why am I not suprised? I wish the judges in my area would start smacking the asses of some of these little smartasses we have around here.
While true that stupidity can be a vice at any age, it seems that kids have just that much more. There again, remember that we were all kids once.. Smile
