April is the cruelest month.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND (1966): Certified weird! "Jonathan Miller exhumes a Wonderland without magical beings: the White Rabbit is just a stuffed shirt in a waistcoat, the Cheshire Cat is an ordinary house cat, the drowned animals by the pool of tears are a soggy band of Victorian citizens. By unmasking the story’s anthropomorphic animals, he de-cutifies the fairy tale; the result is, unexpectedly, one of the weirdest and most dreamlike Alices ever put on film."

WAR WITCH (2012): "There is a minor fairytale ambiance to the proceedings, what with the child witches and wizards, accusatory ghosts, and an evil warlord (known by the sobriquet 'the Great Tiger') ensconced in an improbably grand tower in the middle of the jungle."

SHERLOCK JR. (1924): "Although he looks the part of a stone faced average Joe, once the projectionist dreams himself into celluloid, he becomes a flawless and imposing detective."-AE

A taxing slate of reviews...

CASINO ROYALE (1967): "...a completely incoherent psychedelic mess, which, if you’re in the right frame of mind, can come off as intermittently hilarious... By the end of Casino Royale, matters have gotten so out of hand that there are appearances by the Frankenstein monster, a performing seal, a clapping chimp, and a troupe of stereotypical tomahawk-wielding 'Indians' dancing the Frug."-SS

SPRING BREAKERS (2012): "The film’s maddest moment occurs as Alien sits at his beachside grand piano surrounded by the bikinied breakers in pink ski masks and croons a Britney Spears ballad that segues into a crime spree music video."

FAST, CHEAP AND OUT OF CONTROL (1997): "...although it isn’t exactly weird, Morris’ unique, experimental documentary is thought provoking—and although it’s organic and seems unplanned, it’s not nearly as out-of-control as its title implies."

PLAYHOUSE (1921)/STEAMBOAT BILL JR. (1928): "These two Buster Keaton films, separated by seven years, represent the artist at his most hyperkinetic."-AE

ROGER EBERT'S (UNAUTHORIZED, CONJECTURAL) TOP 10 WEIRD MOVIES: "People forget that, as a Russ Meyer screenwriter, this same Roger Ebert was the creator of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls‘ Z-Man, the acid-tripping, broadsword wielding hermaphrodite manager of the big boob babe band The Carrie Nations. The man knew his weird."

TRANCE (2013): "Fans of the [Rosario Dawson's] vulva will definitely want to check Trance out; her pubic hair is a minor plot point.

1 (2009): "Those who read the book riot. Meanwhile, the quartet of suspects is whisked away to a government installation/dolphin habitat run by the Reality Defense Institute, where they are drugged and interrogated. Then pears start showing up everywhere. Then things get a little weird."

THE NAVIGATOR (1924) AND FROZEN NORTH (1922): "Down in the murky ocean below, Rollo meets a couple of swordfish and, in the film’s most iconic highlight, he seizes one fish and engages in an underwater fencing duel with a second."-AE

Winding up the month...

THE LORDS OF SALEM (2012): "If you go you’ll see a fairly standard horror movie setup, a muddled middle, and an ambitious ending; you’ll see demons of every shape and size (including one looks like Chewbacca), corpses and rats and goats, psychedelic effects, blasphemous Satanic sex rituals, nude hags, cameos by minor genre icons like Dee Wallace and Patricia Quinn (the credits say Michael Berryman and Sid Haig are in there somewhere too, though I didn’t spot them), and Sheri Moon’s skinny butt. If that kind of hodgepodge sounds it worth it to you, and you don’t need a coherent story or artistic vision to tie it all together, than by all means have at it."

THAT OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE (1977): " The “gimmick” of two actresses playing the object of desire is the high-concept highlight of That Obscure Object of Desire, but make no mistake: the casting was not a desperation move to salvage some sort of novelty value out of a dull script. Buñuel’s final film is one of his most tightly controlled and plotted movies, the work of a 77-year old master intent on putting the final punctuation on a distinguished career."

ADAM COOLEY'S TEN WEIRDEST MOVIES EVER: "This list was really hard to compile, since I mainly watch what a lot of people would describe as 'weird' films---experimental, underground, off-beat, subversive cinema is what I'm primarily interested in---so I basically had to think about hundreds, if not thousands, of films for possible inclusion here. So, when asked to do this list, it took me a couple of years (!) to compile it and be happy with the end result, as I constantly felt the need to change it up."

GO WEST (1925)/ONE WEEK (1920): "The most inventive gag is Friendless donning a devil’s outfit and literally becoming a waving red flag to round-up the wayward herd."-AE

Out like a (sacrificial) lamb.

UPSTREAM COLOR (2013): "...most viewers will likely leave unsure of exactly what went on, but certain that whatever it was, it was beautiful."-AK

MESSAGE FROM SPACE (1978): " ...while Message from Space doesn’t have any of the qualities that made Star Wars great, it does have a lot of features Star Wars lacks. For one thing, it has glowing space walnuts sent by the gods to wander the universe."

"If you're of a certain age, and have a deep nostalgia for crap..."

Oh, I do. Unfortunately, whenever I try and reopen those glitzy childhood wonders they turn out to be, well, crap.

Yep, sometimes memories are better left as memories. On the other hand I liked MESSAGE FROM SPACE better as a bad movie-appreciating adult than I did as a kid, when it was just a bad movie to me.
