Mad scientist or incredible genius?  I have created a couple of monsters....

Introduced my children to MST3000 last week with THE GIANT GILA MONSTER episode.

They are begging...BEGGING...me to watch more.

Incredible genius.  Smile

I don't know how old your kids are, but the episodes my nephews (from ages 8-13) liked best were

SANTA CLAUS VS. THE MARTIANS
SANTA CLAUS
PRINCE OF SPACE
EEGAH
TIME OF THE APES
CAVE DWELLERS
POD PEOPLE

They hated CATALINA CAPER and MASTER NINJA 2, although the 13 year old has gotten so that he likes almost all of them now even if they don't have monsters.

Thanks for those suggestions; we'll check 'em out.  We almost watched CAVE DWELLERS today, but opted for THE BEGINNING OF THE END instead.  You know, the one with Peter Graves.   TeddyR

That was begun a LONG time ago.  This is just a new phase.

I think kids have to appreciate BAD movies before they can get the irony. Most kids think japanese monster movies are cool. You have to be able to distinguish GOOD from BAD to appreciate BAD.
Does that make any sense?  Question
When I was young-about 10-I saw ASTRO ZOMBIES. I knew it was awful. About the same time I seen DRACULA VS FRANKENSTEIN. I was p**sED when I saw it. Now I love them both. It takes time to love-REALLY love-BAD movies. It aint for greenhorns.
I am not a fan of MST3000-so I guess im biased. I like bad movies raw.And do my own riffs.

This is actually a good idea: if they get into the MST3K spirit enough then you could actually attempt to make your own rifftrax with them.  Perhaps start with a film they watch alot [but could tear to shreds].  It would add a bit more sanity for you, given that most kids I know tend to watch the same films over and over again, much to some parent's despair.  It could also be a fun activity in general.

I know I didn't discover MST3K until my early 20s, part of the curse of being in a country that never got it on TV here, but I can imagine making your own riffs as something I would have had fun doing when I was a youngster.

I dindnt discover MST untill 1995-I was 33-I watched it because where else could I watch MANOS and the CREEPING TERROR-but the robots annoyed me. But its a good way to get kids beyond big budget bulls**t
and discover the joys of low budget films!  Thumbup

We do watch bad movies raw and have for years.

How this came up, just to throw it out there:  my son had made a 'robot' out of Legos and I thought it oddly resembled Tom Servo.  So, I figured that was a pretty good segue into MST.

They have both been watching 'bad movies' since they have been born.   TeddyR

As for ASTRO ZOMBIES, I think I posted here about my son's reaction to that...he was 5 or 6 at the time, I think.  That was not the MST version if they have a version.

My kids-their 19 and 21 now-watched LOTS of bad movies with me. We watched BLOOD FREAK together! They loved BRIDE OF THE MONSTER when they were little chillin's! Eddies favorite movie is still THE BRAIN THAT WOULDNT DIE. I taught them well. My step son Jimbo loves NIGHT BEAST-and I have never had so much fun as hanging out with his punk rock freinds when watching PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE or GLENN AND GLENDA-and that movie almost wants me to cut my throat. unbearable unless your really drunk with freinds.  Thumbup THATS entertinment!

I only got into MST3K about three years ago when I saw highlights of Mitchell and The Final Sacrifice on Youtube.

I've not yet introduced my children to MST3K yet, as they are still a bit young. The have however enjoyed a couple of the "shorts" from the Rifftrax collection. So, their time is coming. :)

Riffing is good way to teach them to 'think on their feet', when a scene plays out. If your kid gets that 'I just though-a somthin!' look, be prepared for imagination on the way!
