No spoilers.

I enjoyed it.  It's definitely possible the movie will irritate a certain amount of the fanbase, due to the choices made.  I think they did a good job of telling a story in the Trek universe, but making it diverge in interesting ways.

I really enjoy the actors chosen as the main characters, and although the movie was uneven in places, it was still well done, enjoyable.

I am glad you enjoyed this one, zapranoth, as there are few things worst than laying down your hard earned money on a movie you think you might enjoy, then finding out that you didn't like it.

I, on the other hand, have no interest in seeing it, as I saw the one before this, and I didn't like what they did to the characters.

As for the fanbase maybe being upset, this is not the only recent movie, where the fanbase is upset. Browsing other boards, the fanbase for "Iron Man" is seemingly upset with the way that the characters, especially Mandarin, are portrayed in "Iron Man 3."

And I think we might see more of this, as moviemakers have seemingly increasingly started making movies for the masses, with the changes they think are needed, as opposed to making movies for the fanbase.

As I have little knowledge or memory of the original Star Trek beyond the main characters and the first movie, the new ST movie lost nothing for me.  I'm looking forward to Into Darkness as a continuation of that 'universe', apart from really liking JJ Abrams' work.

It seems difficult for Hollywood to please the camps of the mainstream audience and the existing fanbase.  Even George Lucas got into trouble with this when he shot the second Star Wars trilogy - not to mention his egregious edits of later versions of the original trilogy.

Disappointingly, I understand Marvel's decision to portray the Mandarin as they did in IM3, considering today's political climate.  It's a bit ironic, as the Mandarin character was a product of THAT sociopolitical climate, too.  But I cannot forgive Fox for their complete backyard abortion of Dr Doom in the FF movies, as it was an unnecessary dumb-down of a very deep character.

Back to Into Darkness: I haven't seen it yet, as work is going bananas, but as soon as a time slot opens I will be there.

I saw it this weekend and I really enjoyed it!  I'm definitely not a lifelong ST fan - prior to this weekend, the only real ST exposure I had was when they showed the cartoon on Nickelodeon back in the '80s.  I had never seen any of the versions of the tv show or the prior movies.  I hadn't even seen the 2009 Abrams movie until a couple of days ago when we watched it in preparation for the sequel.

I think I may have even liked this second one more than the first (although, from what I hear, I'm in the minority there), but both of them are pretty good popcorn flicks, even for the uninitiated.

In reading my comments above, I realize that I actually didn't particularly contribute to the conversation.  "Hey, let's go see the new Star Trek because that guy JayJay said it was pretty good but didn't qualify his comments with any reasoning."  "I'm in."

I don't know...reading "Hey, I enjoyed it" is as reasonable a reason to see a movie based on what someone else said as any film school analysis.

I just saw this yesterday.  I feel the same way about this movie that I did about the first one.  It was a good movie and lots of fun to watch, but I HATED the lens flares.  Every time there's a scene on the bridge the characters faces get partially covered by lens flares.  Drives me up the freaking wall!

Thought the first one was a blast and so went in with a couple of friends expecting a great time. We all thought it was a huge disappointment. Apparently we are not the majority as the theater clapped at the end and critics seem to love it so take that with a grain of salt.
-Hated the 3d
-Too much repetitive constant action. There are several set pieces here which we have already seen in the previous remake as well as in other films. I think abrams feels if theres not action every couple minutes that ppl would get bored for me the effect was the opposite.
-Writing quality has gone down significantly here, I have no comprehension of how ppl accept this in star trek: I D but despised Lindelof's work on Prometheus. It's the same writer and all the plot/character inconsistencty problems in that movie are worse here.
-The comic relief that was in the first film is here, but it's 10x more annoying this time through.
-The lens flares didn't bother me this time through because they were largely replaced by dutch angles for no reason at all.

I absolutely despised this movie, but as I said I am clearly in the minority although I have seen some online reviews that echo my complaints. The worst movie I have seen all year, and because I decided to treat 2 friends it was a 60 plus dollar bad movie experience!

You can blame a South African for those lens flares: Daniel Mindel ASC is responsible.  TeddyR

As a long time Trekkie, I have really enjoyed both of these "reboot" movies.  Very well done, and the casting is perfect!  The homage to WRATH OF KHAN is very impressive.

I liked it! 4/5.

*Generally well-plotted, it kept moving and had some unexpected twists.
*Didn't notice any lens flare until the end credits.
*I liked that there were some parallels with contemporary moral dilemmas, i.e. the use of unarmed drones/photon torpedoes to kill terrorist fugitives.
*Alice Eve doesn't do much in the story, but she sure is yummy! Not sure if they can develop her character beyond eye candy.
*I still think the Uhura/Spock romance is a horrible, horrible mistake.
*This may be crazy, but I'm starting to think Zachary Quinto makes a better Spock than Leonard Nimoy!

Finally got time to see it, just yesterday, and I was really happy.  Although it departs from the usual Star Trek pace and makes it into an action scifi movie, it brings the Trek universe up to date and introduces some old adversaries into the new timeline.

There's a great clip on YouTube that puts lens flares into original classic Star Trek footage!

Small | Large

I quite like lens flare, and in a behind the scenes look at the making of Into Darkness, you can see JJ beside the camera, waving a powerful spotlight across the lens to create more flare.  That screen-wide anamorphic lens flare is quite attractive, I think, and you can see it in so many movies.  Even recent movies like Total Recall (2012) are full of anamorphic lens flares.  Although I have to admit that it was a little overdone on the bridge scenes.

Small | Large

+1 that Alice Eve is yummy!  The momentary 'fan service' scene is gold.  Benedict Cumberbatch is a fantastic villain, playing it with a fierce and cold intensity that I haven't seen from an actor in a long time.

There was a fair bit of effort made to incorporate what I think were classic Trek references and moments, but as I do not have a deep Trek knowledge, I cant' opine whether these were well done or not.  The plot twist was unexpected but not unforseeable, if that makes sense, but it was still good.

Overall, I really like it, and I'll be happy to lay down cash when the inevitable blu-ray is released.

Saw ALIAS:STAR TREK, have no plans to see this. There's something to be said for sticking with an established mythos, and this one should never have been debased in this way, any more than Superman should've knocked up Lois Lane out of wedlock, then ran like a scoundrel for five years,  or Bruce Wayne should've soiled his father's name by insulting his friends, or allowing someone to die deliberately.

These changes are made to appease the lowest (in every sense of the word) common denominator, and are disgusting.

Things I learned from this movie:

- Kirk is remarkably reluctant to take his shirt off.
- you can actually kickstart a spaceship
- the best place for a war room is high up in a skyscraper

Still, it is an enjoyable fun ride.
