This is our last week of school, and my students are taking their history exams for me this week. If you have ever wondered what kind of teacher I am, here is a little motivational message that I put at the top of my 11th grade Dual Credit U.S. History exam:
HERE WE ARE. For an entire year we have blazed a trail through American history, chipping out stone spearpoints with the Indians, planting Spain's flag alongside Columbus, scrambling up Cemetery Ridge with Pickett's division, and storming the beaches at Normandy on D-Day. You have learned about warriors and poets, Presidents and Kings. Now, having wandered our way through the inky dark caverns of antiquity, at long last light looms ahead. A single, narrow bridge, three half days long, stands between you and summer. But on that bridge lurks a monster of flame and despair, an examination of agony, wielding a whip of red ink, and defiantly shouting "You shall not pass!!!" ARE YOU READY TO PROVE HIM WRONG??? Cast the Balrog of Ignorance into the pit of historical knowledge, and fight your way to summer!! FREEEEEEEDOOOOOMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
