The famed South African filmmaker Jans Rautenbach - one of my few mentors in life - sent me a script on Friday, asking my opinion of it. On Sunday, I finished it, emotionally wrung out. Mr R hasn't made a film since retiring in 1984 but has always claimed that he will be back: and back he is, with a story out of his own life where he gave work to a struggling artist. The artists' work remains but the artist is no more: on one horrible day, he destroyed everything in his life and then was smashed into eternity by a passing truck on the freeway
I told Mr R that when this went into production (possibly early next year) that I would give up my precious yearly leave (all 30 days of it) and take a sabbatical from work to assist him on the production in whatever capacity I could and if I knew little or nothing of the task at hand, I would learn bloody quickly.
The old master of JANNIE TOTSIENS and KATRINA is back: this is good.
