A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: July 11, 2013, 12:06:29 AM »

This was a dark, disturbing, and fascinating movie that I rented on a whim this afternoon.

Richard Stoker, loving father, husband, and respected businessman, has died in a mysterious car accident, leaving his beautiful but troubled daughter India and his alcoholic wife Evelyn (played by Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman, respectively). On the day of the funeral, Richard's younger brother Charlie shows up unexpectedly.  India doesn't even know he exists, and Eve only knows that he has been traveling in Europe for many years.
But there is a dark and violent streak in the handsome young uncle, and the more it emerges, the more both mother and daughter find him irresistible - but eventually, his own motives are made clear, as is his mysterious past.
I really liked this film, but it had some very dark moments in it.  India is fascinating, attractive, pitiful, and repulsive at times, and Matthew Goode is both charming and psychotic as Uncle Charlie.  In short, this is a really brilliant movie, and I highly recommend it - but don't expect an  uplifting story.

Been looking forward to seeing this for a while.

I'm a huge fan of Chan-wook Park, of Oldboy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance fame. I'm quite curious to see what his "Western" (as in not Korean) movie will be like.

Also, thanks for not spoiling anything, indy.

I've been hearing good things, and have booked a ticket to see it at the upcoming Melbourne International Film Festival.

Can't wait!
