I've been trying to remember a film from the late 80's for some time.

I remember very little except two scenes.  I think it was the same film but it's possible I'm thinking of two films.

Scene 1:

Opening sequence of the movie which involves someone running through the bush / forest - maybe trying to get away from someone?  Runs down towards the beach and ends up triggering a trap and getting impaled on some large bamboo / wooden spikes.   Its possible that the person who was impaled was actually in pursuit of the person / protagonist fleeing?

Scene 2:

The film's protagonist is dropped of a sailing ship onto a tiny island (just a few feet wide) in the middle of the ocean and left to die.  Another ship comes along and someone sees the protagonist standing "on the water" and thinks it must be Jesus.

The captain says something along the lines of:  "Well ask him to walk on over then.  If he can't then send a rowboat to get him".

Apologies for the extreme lack of detail (challenge!) and possible confusion between two films.

Thank you!

In the town of Valentine Bluffs, there are many ways to die. Take your pick.

Maybe Roman Polanski's "Pirates".

Maybe Roman Polanski's "Pirates".

No, definitely not "Pirates".   It may not have actually been a pirates film but simply involved an island and ship for part of it. To be honest I can't even remember if the ship had sails.

Shipwrecked 1990. Is that your movie?

Thanks for the suggestion but no, not Shipwrecked. Heh... I highly doubt a Disney film will ever have an opening sequence where someone gets impaled on some very large bamboo / wooden spikes :)

You do have a point.
However I do recall in all 4 Pirates of the Caribbean movies people getting impaled with swords. Wink

Sorry I couldn't help.

I think I know the film you are talking about. Your 2nd clue gave it away, but I can't remember the title or anybody in it, but I do give a list of every non-G rated film I've seen. So, let me go through that list and maybe the title will pop up.

I found the film I was seeking. It was "Nate and Hayes" from 1983 with Tommy Lee Jones as Captain Bully Hayes and Michael O'Keefe as Nathaniel (Nate) Williamson. Also starring Jenny Seagrove. Looking at the info I had for it, I liked it better than I thought. Thinking it was no worst than mediocre. Which surprised me, as I remember so much about the film. Mediocre films I tend to forget. It is only the best and the worst that I tend to remember.

One of the many pirate films out at that time. Others being "Pirates," "Yellowbeard," "Swashbuckler," "The Pirate Movie," and "Cutthroat Island." All of 'em failed at the box office. And I can see why. I have seen most of 'em, and they are terrible. It would take "Pirates of the Caribbean" to revive the pirate picture franchise.

And, oh yes. Captain Bully Hayes actually existed.

I hope this helps.

Scene 1 reminds me of a scene in "Papillon", however, it was not an opening scene.
