The Bizarre Meteorite Last Night

What you've been waiting for.
The irresistible minerals of our afterlife
Awakened them from their recurring coma.

Radiation descended toward jagged terrain.

A deer was calcified.

This world that we're a-living in,
Is mighty hard to beat,
You get a thorn with every rose,
But ain't the roses sweet?

The days when sour winds
Scour concrete landscapes,
Post-modern in promise
But old in their hearts,
Are the times when betrayals
Ring sweetest in spirits
Made weak from longing,
Stirrings hearts vulnerable to
Lies set like tinder in ashes
Coaxed to glowing life
For one final gift of heat
Amid the coldness of
Hope slowly dying.

Someone I knew in high school wrote this for a college composition class in late 1995. It was the start of a longer piece commenting on the Republicans' big win in 1994. He said you can rarely go wrong with your college professors by bashing the Republican Party. He had a point, and got an A for the class.

None would live past years again,
Yet all hope pleasure in what yet remain;
And, from the dregs of life, think to receive,
What the first sprightly running could not give.
