Film where main character dies, and the kids have weird powers

Okay this is a complete long shot but I remember watching a film ages ago and I liked it purely because the ending was so different to most films, as the main character died right at the end quite unexpectedly, so what I do remember is:

Theres a bunch of kids/teenagers who are all kind of social outcasts
I'm pretty sure it's set kinda in the time it was made (in the 90s) and is just on this american family street
There's a girl that looks a bit like Jean Grey turning into Phoenix in X-Men 3 (I saw her picture on tickld - this is what reminded me of this film.)

But right at the end the girl hugs the main character guy and burns him and he just crumbles no screaming or anything.

And that's it. I'm really not expecting to find it out but it's worth a go! It's just bugging me at the minute
