10.29.13 (51)

In honor of the upcoming UK Blu-ray release I've re-watched

Hellgate (1990) (DVD)

Watchability: 4/5
Energy drain: 1/5

Where to begin? Three friends in a cabin tell each other urban legend stories and one is about the Hellgate-Hitchhiker: back in the 1950s the beautiful daughter of a man who runs a ghost town/tourist attraction called "Hellgate" is kidnapped and killed by a motorcycle gang. The father resurrects his dead daughter with a magical Krystal that either: A - resurrects dead animals and make them explode and B - turns the living into grotesque beings and make them explode. Either way, the living dead daughter now haunts the roads of Hellgate seducing and killing men. 30 years later her father has turned into a Terminator-like protector of his daughter and townsfolk are now ghostly zombified beings. This is where part 2 of the story picks up - the three friends + another friend who had a run in with the daughter visit Hellgate and all hell breaks loose.
Bad movie extravaganza with odd looking female casting (one looks like she has down syndrome), so-bad-so-good practical f/x, acting, dialogue. The plot is all over the place and there's something hilarious bad happening every minute or so. Certainly not boring! I will gladly buy the Blu-ray once released.

Blood Frenzy (1987) - a group of people head out to the desert for a group therapy session.  You got the nympho, the guy who thinks he's still in Vietnam, a-hole characters both male and female, a happy drunk, a girl who doesn't like to be touched, and of course the doctor.  I guess the filmmaker's first priority was to firmly establish the a-holes as a-holes, which they accomplish by having the first 5 minutes be nothing but yelling.  How pleasant.  It gets a little better after that;  not much though.  Dialogue and acting is pretty terrible.  I had a little fun guessing who the killer was.  There are a couple so-bad-they're-good scenes, like where the Vietnam guy commits suicide by blowing himself up with dynamite.  This takes place off-screen but other characters see it and it makes us think he actually killed himself.  They even find a severed hand afterwards.  But it turns out he just faked it lol.  I guess he brought a severed hand along because he had foreseen that he might want to fake his death via dynamite.  There's another scene where the nympho girl finds some dead bodies and is totally freaked out, but then her and a-hole woman get it on right afterwards - like 10 seconds afterwards.  I think nympho girl was cute, though I can't say for sure as I was watching it on a lousy 240p Youtube video.  I don't think I'll be spending $40 for an ex-rental VHS copy of this to see if I was right  BounceGiggle  I'd kind of recommend you skip this one.  2.5/5.  And that's extremely generous.

^ About half of the movie looks like this.

Galaxy of Terror (1981) - some people on a spaceship go to another planet where they find a mysterious pyramid that causes them all to realize their worst fears.  I don't like this movie  BounceGiggle  It's probably a bad movie favorite and I'll admit the art direction is awesome, but the script is nonsensical crap and should have been thrown in the trash.  Half the stuff these people say is just drivel and the characters themselves are so bad they don't even qualify as characters, just one-note cartoons.  The plot is dopier than an episode of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.  Sigh.  2/5.

Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972) - a girl spends the night at a remote, abandoned village and is killed by undead Templar knights.  Two of her friends then go to the village, accompanied by a couple of smugglers, to try to locate her.  Looks like a nice feast for the undead blind guys.  This is a favorite of mine.  Very slow moving but I could relate to the first girl who got killed, and the rest of it is such sleazy cheese it's just a hoot.  4/5.

Return of the Evil Dead (1973) - some idiots built an entire village around the tombs of the undead Templars and that's bad news for the inhabitants on the 500th anniversary of their execution.  We follow a group of people who take shelter in a church and try to stay alive until morning.  I originally didn't care too much for this but this is about the third time I've seen it and it's kind of grown on me.  The characters are such sleazeballs it's just entertaining to see what sort of horrible thing they'll do next - like lead a little girl out of the church, knowing full well she'll start screaming when she sees the walking corpses, and using her as a diversion so they can make it to the cars  Thumbup  4/5.

So Halloween is here and that means this marathon is coming to a close. I'm going to try to knock out a few more movies today as I have a day off work. As well I'm going to do a recap of all the films I watched, what was the best, the worst, the grossest etc...

Movie # 35
Mulberry Street (2006)
On the same day an apartment complex is being evicted rats begin spreading a deadly infection across New York city. It's similar to a zombie infection with one big difference the people who get bit transform into rat people!

I was super impressed with this movie even before knowing it was shot on the nothing budget of 50k. It has a fantastic gritty feel to it in everything from the locations, hand held shots, and acting. Reminiscent of 28 Days Later in a good way this is a fantastic debut film from Jim Mickle and I'm not surprised he has moved on to bigger projects.

Movie # 36
Trick R Treat (2007)
I've been hearing nothing but great things about this anthology film and was looking forward to it. I can see why it is popular (it looks great, some good humor) but I have to say I wasn't crazy about it. Maybe I'm just sick of horror movies at this point of the marathon (a very real possibility) but I really only liked the stuff with Dylan Baker with the other stories leaving me cold.

Movie # 37
Fade To Black (1980)
Our main character Eric is a movie addict. He spends every waking moment watching old films, quoting movies and spouting movie trivia. Living with his aunt he is constantly berated that he is wasting his life so he pushes her wheelchair down the stairs. On his own he gets up to no good commiting acts of revenge against his enemies while stalking a Marilyn Monroe look alike.

This is a cheesy little flick that has a decent concept but really overdoes it with the movie references. Pretty much everything out of Eric's mouth is a movie quote and this becomes annoying pretty quick. Mickey Rourke appears in one of his first movie appearances in a small part. So does Tim Thomerson (Trancers) who despite being a professor who works out of a police station still finds time to snort cocaine and whale on the harmonica. Has some charms but overall doesn't work and is badly shot (I counted two boom mics.)

The List
1)The New York Ripper (1982)
2)Wrong Turn 3 Left For Dead
3)Curse of Chucky
4)Rats The Nights of Terror
5)The Strangers
6)Mother's Day
7)Frozen
8)P2
9)VHS 2
10)ATM
11)The Ruins
12) Eden Lake
13)The Horde
14)Elevator
15)Let The Right One In
16)Bride of Chucky
17)Excision
18)Some Guy Who Kills People
19)The Loved Ones
20) Kill List
21)Terror Tract
22)Cherry Falls
23)Campfire Tales
24)Demons 6: The Black Cat
25)Invitation to Hell
26)The Gate 2: Trespassers
27)Altitude
28)The Woman
29)Farmhouse
30)The Collector
31 Friday the 13th 7: The New Blood
32)Jason X
33)Jason Lives: F13 6
34)Crystal Lake Memories
35)Mulberry Street
36)Trick R Treat
37)Fade to Black

Worst-In terms of sheer ineptitude I would give the prize to Bruno Mattei for Rats: The Nights of Terror. Campfire Tales was just lame. ATM had the stupidest characters and was frustrating the whole time.

Best-Curse of Chucky is a great return to form. Let the Right One in was gorgeously shot and a great twist on the vampire mythos. Excision was the most original. Kill List had the best atmosphere of any of these films. If I had to rewatch any film on this list it would have to be Mothers Day which blew me away with its mix of dark comedy, sadism and action. Others: Mulberry Street, The Collector, Farmhouse

Most Disturbing-The Woman and Eden Lake both just made me feel dirty watching them. I can see that talent went into making them but ultimately I didn't enjoy either at all. However in a way these were the "horrifying of them all" so I have to give them credit for that

Scariest-The Strangers-The simplicity of this films premise and the lack of motivation of "The Strangers" made this quite the unsettling experience. More than once I have thought about those masked intruders when I'm alone in my house at 2 in the morning.

Just Plain Forgettable-Altitude, P2, Gate 2, The Ruins, and Invitation to Hell all had very little to remember them for although I wouldn't say I outright hated any of them.

Weirdest-Demons 6: The Black Cat

Best John Ritter Appearance-While he was ok as the domineering father in Bride of Chucky it was the demented real estate agent from "Terror Tract" that will stand as this months champion.

Thanks for everybody for participating, and feel free to do your own look backs at the films you watched this month. What worked, what scared you, etc....

I capped off my month of horror by re-watching the excellent, creepy film MIRRORS with Kiefer Sutherland . . . my daughters joined me for that one, and we all liked it - a second viewing for me.
After that, I watched V/H/S 2 which was one of those rare cases where the sequel IMO was way superior to the original.  Four tightly woven vignettes connected by a very simple, straightforward narrative - not nearly as hard to follow as the original.  Probably my favorite was the guy who got the prototype for a new computerized eye after losing his in a car accident.  But all of them were solid, something that could not be said for the first film in this series.

I have two others I rented Wednesday night, but I will have to watch them tomorrow.
It's been a fun month!  Here is my total list:

Oct. 5 - FRIGHT NIGHT 2: NEW BLOOD
Oct. 11 - ZOMBIE HUNTER
Oct. 16 - THE PURGE
Oct. 18 - VAMP U
Oct. 20 - STALKER
Oct. 22 - REEL EVIL
Oct. 25 - THE CONJURING
Oct. 27 - DEAD IN TOMBSTONE
Oct. 31 - MIRRORS
Oct. 31 - V/H/S 2

Not as many horror titles as some of you managed, but pretty respectable for a schoolteacher in a very busy time of the year!

10.30.13 (52)

After Midnight (1989) (DVD)

Too bad we are still stuck with the letterboxed MGM DVD. This anthology certainly deserves better. I love the stories, especially the first and second which are oozing with great atmosphere. The film kind of runs out of steam in the third act but the wild ending of the wraparound story makes up for it. 4/5

10.31.13 (54)

Creature from Black Lake (1976) (DVD)

Two 40something students from Chicago come to hick town Louisiana researching Bigfoot activity involving death of a hunter. Townsfolk are tight-lipped and the local sheriff is threatening but the two students are still able to gather enough information. Once settled in the forest things get tense as the students encounter a hairy beast.
One of the better 1970s Bigfoot exploitation flicks with a decent/charming cast, gritty setting, some humor and thrilling moments of Bigfoot carnage. 3.5/5

Halloween: Extended Edition (1978/1981) (DVD)

Slasher-Classic expanded with added TV Version footage. Not a definite version by any means but an interesting for sure. 5/5

31 (54) ~ Halloween (Extended Edition) (1978)

The good: Evil Dead (2013), Stoker (2013) and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013) turned out to be better than I expected. The Bay (2012) and The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia (2013) weren't too shabby either. While I'll have to admit that Rare Exports (2010) and Frankenweenie (2012) are certainly well made but both left me slightly disappointed. Especially Frankenweenie.

The bad (ass): most fun re-visit - Hellgate (1990), and I sort of enjoyed Blood Mania (1970) more on my second viewing.

The ugly: Monsteroid (1980) gives a new meaning to the word "dull" while Splatter University (1984) remains to make me feel torn. In some way I despise the added Troma footage but on the other hand it also adds to the movie, although making it a different kind of movie as the director intended.

Night of the Seagulls (1975) - a doctor and his wife move to a horrible little village where all the residents are very unfriendly.  They soon find out this is because they're sacrificing maidens to the blind dead at night and don't really care to talk to any newcomers about it.  This is a big favorite of mine with excellent atmosphere and a good cast of characters.  4.5/5.

The Ghost Galleon (1974) - a couple of models get stuck on a spooky old ghost ship out in the ocean.  After meeting their fate via the blind dead, another group of people come looking for them and also end up stranded on the galleon.  After much cheesiness they come up with a kind of neat and commonsensical plan to defeat the ol' zombie menace.  I always like the atmosphere in this one but last night it got a bit dull, maybe because it was the 4th Blind Dead movie we watched.  Even the adorable Blanca Estrada couldn't save it:

Though she saved that part she was in  TeddyR  3.75/5.

The Mummy (1999) - Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz find the lost Egyptian city of Hamunaptra and inadvertently unleash The Mummy.  It's up to them to stop it before its evil force takes over the whole world!  Many many special effects follow.  This is another favorite of mine, just pure dumb fun from start to finish.  4.5/5.

We watched a ton of movies this month, partly because our daughter joined us for our horror movie marathons quite a few times;  my wife and I would have been happy to watch 2 movies and be in bed by ten but she's like "Oh c'mon, just one more!"   TeddyR  They never change from when they were five years old, do they lol.  We had a great time, nothing like some blood and guts to bring the family together  Cheers

Favorites:  got into some Asian horror this month and I think Phone was my favorite.  It wasn't perfect by any means, but I thought it had excellent horror movie atmosphere, great characters and the story was told in an exciting manner.

Most scary:  Noroi: The Curse.  Really took us out of our comfort zone and provided some good creepiness.

Worst:  Didn't really see anything terrible this month, though Apollo 18, Anthropophagus and A Tale of Two Sisters all disappointed.

Halloween Night
Tremors III
Nightmares in Red, White & Blue
City of the Walking Dead aka Nightmare City

Total: 13 (plus some family friendly, seasonally appropriate stuff like "Ghostbusters" and "My Babysitter's a Vampire" with the kids.)

... I just realized that this is the first October in recent memory where I didn't watch at least one of the Halloween series... which is actually OK, cuz to be honest I've seen most of them so many times over the years that I'm kinda burnt out on them (esp. the first three).

The Blind Dead ROCK!!! The other two films in the series are Ghost Galleon and Night of the Seagulls. A very worthy series of movies, and a unique take on the living daed. The Blind Dead are truly cool!

I think this can be unsticked because it's the middle of December.
