Russell Mulcahy's Tale of the Mummy (1998) - archaeologists discover a really cool tomb of an evil Egyptian prince named Talos.  They bring the sarcophagus and mummy wrappings back to the London Museum and sure enough, as soon as the planets align correctly people start turning up dead.  It's up to an American detective and a really cute British babe to get to the bottom of it.  Other than some rather chuckle-inducing CGI I thought this was really good.  A decent plot, likable characters and a cool ending too.  4/5.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Werewolf (1998) - Some "archaeologists" lol find the skeleton of a werewolf and soon enough various people start developing a little problem with lycanthrophy.  A really cheesy and laughable movie, and the guys have quite a fun time ripping it a new one.  I dunno, I've got a rotten cold and wasn't exactly feeling in a joyous mood, but still managed to get a few chuckles out of it.  A very generous 3/5.

Watched Slaughter High.  Kind of sloppily made at times, but I found this a likable film - the people who made this really wanted to make a slasher, and are sort of amateurish but the genuine desire to make a film is there, if that makes sense.  The film is generally fun because of this.  Not great, but worth a watch.  6/10.

WRONG TURN 5 nearly put me off the popular Cannibal Mutant Hillbilly series for good.
It was mean-spirited torture porn from start to finish with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
But I hadn't seen a CMH movie in awhile, so when I saw WRONG TURN 6: LAST RESORT was out
this week, I decided to give it a spin and I am glad I did.

Danny is a failed Wall Street lawyer recovering from an emotional meltdown when he receives
word that he has inherited a nineteenth century resort hotel in the Appalachians.  With his GF,
her brother, and several friends in tow, he heads up to Hobb Springs resort to check out his new
acquisition.  The friends are an annoying, shallow bunch of slasher bait, but the curators of the
hotel are two of Danny's long lost cousins, Jackson and Sally - and Three Fingers and his deformed
brethren are keeping a watchful eye on the place from the woods.

What follows is the now predictable pattern of nudity, gore, and cannibalism we have come to
know and expect from this franchise, but served up with a bit more humor and a lot more plot
than the last 2 entries.  I enjoyed this one way more than I should have!

ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2.

First, I should mention I found the original film a mixed bag.  It had a couple moderately likable characters, fairly competent acting, a menacing film, and some of the best gore I've ever seen in a slasher.  In particular, I thought its combination of CG and practical gore was the best of both.  But, it had serious pacing issues, and wasn't totally satisfying.  Still, I liked it enough to watch the sequel...

And man...  **SPOILERS ABOUND FOR SEQUEL AND ORIGINAL!*

What a piece of crap.  The gore is still pretty amazing, but that's practically the only thing of note here. The direction is worse, the acting is worse (two or three decent performances, a couple forgettable ones, several bad ones), the plot is convoluted and poorly explained.  This also has to have the STUPIDEST CHARACTERS IN ANY SLASHER FILM EVER.  Seriously, I've seen dozens of slashers, and the stupidest high school kids going into dark basements of abandoned buildings are ten times smarter than the police in this film.

More importantly though, large parts of the film are dull and boring.  The plot is just a mess.  Ugh.  The movie made me kind of angry at times.  And the ending?  STUPID.

Also, can I say that having ChromeSkull still be alive after what happens to him in the first film is really silly?  They basically retcon the repeated batswings to the skull, by the way, only showing one in the flashback.

**END**

So..  3/10.

Shrieker (1998) - some college kids are living in an abandoned hospital where, unbeknownst to them, 7 people were murdered 50 years earlier.  Soon weird symbols are found burning in the hallway and scary shrieks are heard in the night.  Will anyone survive to see the dawn?!?!  This is an old favorite of mine, a fun Full Moon supernatural slasher.  Characters and acting are good, plot is at least a little bit different, and the creature is kind of cool.  4/5.

Phone (2002) - Korean movie about a female reporter who starts getting weird phone calls.  Her niece answers one of the calls and gets really freaked out - soon she becomes hostile to her mother and is just a general pain in the butt.  The reporter is living alone in her sister's house, which seems to be haunted.  Are these things connected?  This is the second or third time I've watched this so I was finally able to make sense of the whole thing;  the first third or so seems like a bunch of random stuff thrown together that doesn't make sense until you've seen the ending, and it mixes in so many flashbacks to stuff that happened before the movie that it's hard to tell what's going on now.  But it had good atmosphere with never-ending rainstorms and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata playing, likable characters and a pretty cool plot once you figure it out.  4/5.

WITCHING & b***hING (2013): Small-time crooks bump into a coven of witches while on the run. Funny, squirmy, and horrific, with one crazy scene after another (punk witch Carolina Bang humps a broomstick while drizzling the blood of a toad over herself), this mad Spanish import is the movie FROM DUSK TILL DAWN always wanted to be. Whoever approved the English language title should be burned at the stake, however. 4.5/5.

Silent House (2011) - a girl gets trapped in an old boarded up house with no electricity, so it's dark and she can't get out.  There's some mysterious intruder lurking about so she's really scared.  This just didn't work for me at all.  The setup - she hears a noise, her and dad check it out and don't find anything, dad leaves the room, she hears another noise and then she can't find dad so she spends literally the next half hour creeping from one room to the next to the next acting terrified - I'm sorry but that's not scary.  The girl needed to go from calm to confused to nervous to scared etc. - from normal to terror stricken in the blink of an eye ruined it for me.  There's obviously a cameraman following her around the entire time which borders on the comical - at one point she's hiding under a table, somebody grabs her leg, she takes off up the stairs and the cameraman runs after her;  I'm like "well if the bad guy wants to catch her he'll have to shove the cameraman out of the way first."  Then toss in an Asian style twist ending which was so clumsily foreshadowed at the beginning that it's obvious...1.5/5.

Noroi: The Curse (2005) - a paranormal investigator documents a bizarre series of seemingly unrelated events in Japan.  Slowly, we learn the strange connections between these events and things get weirder and weirder until we're totally freaked out  Thumbup  I've seen this before so I knew what was going on, but it still managed to be weird as hell in a really effectively tense way.  One of my favorites.  4.5/5

11. Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933): Reporter Florence Dempsey (Glenda Farrell) desperate for a good story stumbles across a great scoop and winds up in the middle of a murder/body snatching mystery we as an audience know has been perpetrated by a mysterious hideous-looking fiend.

I really love this classic and even prefer it over its remake. To me, it's more fast-paced, has that 1930s pre-code style, doesn't reveal its hand too quickly. It features a great performance from Lionel Atwill plus Fay Wray does quite well too as the damsel in distress. I like its style, its feel. I just get totally lost in this one's world when I watch it and I personally find the time flies. Some people complain about Farrell's character being too energetic and talkative but that really didn't bother me too much. Characters like her reporter weren't so uncommon in 1930s murder mystery stories which this is at heart. My girlfriend really loves this one too and also prefers it to the remake.

12. House of Wax (1953): A murderous, body-snatching fiend terrorizes old New York at the turn of the century. Police try to unravel the mystery and bring him down.

This remake is very similar to Mystery of the Wax Museum. Many moments and elements are borrowed outright. There are a few notable changes though. Glenda Farrell's reporter character is replaced here by a witness to the fiend's crimes named Sue Allen (Phyllis Kirk). The tone here is more squarely in the horror vein than in mystery. Vincent Price gives a good performance and this film has many enjoyable moments, especially some pretty good scares and some decent suspense but I just can't take to it so well as its predecessor. To me, it's all a bit too obvious who's behind things here which I feel isn't quite so clear in the first film. Still this is quite a good movie nevertheless and has some moments that border on great. Look for Charles Bronson in a early bit role as a mute henchman.

13. Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979): In yet another retelling of the Count Dracula story, Jonathan Harker (Bruno Ganz) is sent to meet with Count Dracula (Klaus Kiniski) in Transylvania to negotiate the purchase of a house in Wismar, the neighborhood in which he and his young bride Lucy (Isabelle Adjani) reside. Terror and  much death await.

The major difference here from other Dracula stories is the vampire here more resembles Murnau's Nosferatu played by Max Shreck of which this is something of a remake. This film is nowhere near as effective and nowhere near as frightening as Murnau's. This is much more arty and evocative. It does feature some good acting performances most notably by Kiniski in the lead who adequately gets across the despair, loneliness, and isolation of living the way he does. Also Adjani comes across a very powerful woman in this one who isn't easily manipulated. There are some scary moments of Kiniski's Dracula creeping up on characters but this film is in no way as scary as the 1922 classic which I've heard some call the scariest film they've ever seen to this day. I know one person who refuses to watch it again. Me and my girlfriend both enjoyed this but well it's kind of disappointing next to Murnau's classic.

14. The Vampire (1957): Dr. Paul Beecher (John Beal) accidentally takes some pills which turn him into a primitive blood-sucking monster. Meanwhile, local authorities led by Sheriff Buck Donnelly (Kenneth Tobey) try and uncover the mystery of bodies piling up all seemingly dying from a rare blood disease.

This little horror chiller was actually really enjoyable. It takes the traditional horror movie monster and gives it a bit of a science fiction twist. Here we get a vampire who's quite a deviation from the traditional model we usually get in film. Here the monster is an aggressive Mr. Hyde-like beast who snarls and growls with rage as he pursues and attacks his victims. Our lead here is a cursed man (kind of like the Wolf Man) who never asked for this curse and fears what he's become. A really enjoyable little film, this one surprised me by how really good and enjoyable it really is. A fun little horror romp. Of course, I am a bit prejudiced as I do tend to love these types of films.

Beneath Loch Ness (2001) - some researchers are messing around in the Loch and sure enough the ol' CGI monster shows up.  A few people get eaten but of course the local constable doesn't believe any of it.  Not a genre cliche left unturned in this.  Pretty uninteresting really.  Characters weren't much, at least Lysette Anthony added a bit of a spark as the spunky cute chick.  Fairly slow moving with lots of standing around talking and it never generated any real drama. 3/5.

Witching & b***hing
Currently streaming on Netflix. This is a Spanish film (from Spain) so be ready for subtitles. I quite liked it though. It was a nice change from Hollywood's current trend of horror movies with 0 creativity (see: cats jumping out of cupboards in every movie). It is similar to Dusk til Dawn with the start of the movie not being about the main conflict of the film. Its supposed to be a comedy horror but I think because of the subtitles the humor gets lost because the jokes are all dialogue based. But it looks great with good special effects, some general crazy business and lots of action. Never a dull moment.

I loved W&B! 4.5/5 from me!

I posted mini-reviews of MR. JONES (3 stars) and THE LAST MAN ON EARTH (4 stars) in another thread, though they probably belonged here instead.

Black Sunday (1960) - some gents go and undo all the precautions taken 200 years earlier to keep a witch in her tomb;  not too much later she comes back to life and wants to take over the body of a prince's daughter who she just happens to look exactly like.  This is usually a favorite of mine but I think that because I'm still recovering from a lousy cold, I just couldn't enjoy it as much as usual.  Plot took forever to get going and the characters really weren't much.  3/5.

Alien (1979) - what can I say - great characters, awesome monster, excellent suspense, great atmosphere and sets, etc.  5/5.

This is also an interesting film to note as it is a sort of indirect sequel to The Deadly Spawn.  I noticed the creatures similarity, but not much else.  I think it's an enjoyable little film though.

On Halloween, I watched Trick R Treat.  Love this film, and hope the supposed sequel gets made.  I'm contemplating going as Sam for next Halloween.  9/10.

I actually didn't mind that one Jack. I dug the camera work (which is kinda cliche now, but whatever). It was also nice that the girl's cleavage was pretty much the main focus of the whole film.  Smile
