Even though I own the non-MST3K dvd (and it's sequel), I'd probably have to say that Hobgoblins is right up there with the worst...
Really?  I thought Hobgoblins was one of those rare movies that they did where it could have been enjoyable even without the riffing.

I agree with Monster-a-Go-Go which was sadly also the first MST3K episode I watched. Just so painfully boring. The Creeping Terror would take the spot as well, but at least it's awfulness is entertaining.

Which brings up a key part of the MST film selection process. A film that is fun to watch (Plan 9) in it's own right, yet the riffing only adds to the appreciation of the film, rather than detracting from it. Not so easy to do.

I'll join others in saying it's Monster-a-Go-Go. It's painfully boring, the ultimate "nothing happens" movie, an ending which makes no sense and it has the bulk of the cast getting replaced literally half way through. The riffing did nothing to make it more enjoyable.

If not for the attractive women in the cast I'd think POD PEOPLE deserves mention.

this will sound like heresey to most, but I have to confess that I don't find a single episode of mst3k funny. don't get the concept of having those alien things sat down blocking some of the screen and cracking 'jokes' throughout the film while I'm trying to watch it. apparently works for most but not for me.  Thumbdown

problem is there are some hilariously bad looking films out there which I want to see in their original form, and can only find the mst3k versions ('sst death flight' for one)

MST3K is a comedy 'concept' in a way. The movie is the 'straight man' and the riffers are the comics. If you can't 'shift conceptual gears' you can get lost.

Like in PRINCE OF SPACE...A running gag is the fact the aliens have noses that look like chicken beaks. Hence, all the clucking that gets sneaked into the riffs.
I have friend who can't follow the riffs because they don't belong with the story that film is telling. Yet for me, it's funny BECAUSE  they don't fit.
The clucking gag works for me, because I see the setup (Those noses) and that sets up other chicken related gags. Simple to explain, yet it just don't work for some people.

I mention 'conceptual gear shifts' for a reason. It's the best way I can think of to explain what goes on in a riffers mind.
The film is telling one story, and a riff, which enters a concept obviously not intended by the film makers (their noses look like beaks!) changes how you precieve the story. That's the gear shift. Now I see the film from a different angle, and for me, if the line is the right one, I find it funny.

Hope that makes sense, ya'll.

I can attest to this as I am the proud owner of the special 20th anniversary edition of Hobgoblins. It's loaded with extras.  TeddyR

MST3K is all right. It makes me laugh sometimes, but I don't get as much out of it as some people seem to. Most times I'd rather just watch the original film.

Yeah, I think I could have sat through Hobgoblins without Mike and the Bots, because of it's absolute awfulness. I like how it's meant to be a comedy but it's overall attempts at humor are pathetic. The real laughs come from the film's abysmal quality.
