When the tralier first appeared in the cinemas, I was intrigued by the concept, and impressed by the cinematography.  I knew absolutely nothing about Formula One racing or its history, although the names James Hunt and Niki Lauda were vaguely familiar to me.  Way before my time.  But the trailer looked good, so I took the risk and ponied up the cash for the cinema.  I was not disappointed at all.

Rush is a magnificent movie.  Really solid acting, great direction and cinematography, and almost no wasted motion.  Chris Hemsworth is almost a little too convincing as the irresponsible womanizer James Hunt, and Daniel Bruhl plays Niki Lauda with cool determination.  The rest of the cast is almost unnecessary, though.  Olivia Wilde's part is scant and could almost be written out, although the part of Niki Lauda's wife Marlene is more fleshed out.  It's almost as if the entire cast were put together to support the characters of James Hunt and Niki Lauda; but then, it makes sense, as Rush is all about their rivalry in the 1976 Grand Prix.

After seeing Rush, I immediately looked up the relevant people and events, and it appears that the movie portrays things very accurately.  Even Niki Lauda, having seen the movie for the first time, said that it was very accurate, and not changed in a Hollywood manner.  This surprised me, as James Hunt's sex, drugs and racecars lifestyle seemed a little over the top.  If the reports are to be believed, he might have been even more wild than the movie depicts.  As for Lauda, Daniel Bruhl did an amazing job at reproducing his voice.  Check out some interviews with Lauda and you will see what i mean.

One thing that the movie did not portray was that Hunt and Lauda were flatmates for a while in the early days, and very close friends.  The movie made them seem like true rivals, taunting each other across the pits, but I've read that they once shared a one bedroom apartment.  I guess that was a plot choice to enhance the sense of their rivalry.  Who knows.

Definitely one for the blu-ray collection.  I'm very pleased to have seen this magnificent film.  Big thumbs up to Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Ron Howard and Anthony Dod Mantle.  And Hans Zimmer, for his thunderously dramatic Batman style soundtrack!

the fact they shared a one bedroom apartment irl probably explains why they couldn't stand each other  BounceGiggle

nice review. heard a lot of good things about this so will probably check it, even though I'm not big on bio-pics/true story type movies generally...

Good review. I'll take your word over anything that I read in the newspapers around here; for such a red state, Alaska has a lot of liberal newspapers for some reason. There haven't been a whole lot of Formula One racing movies in quite a while. The last one that I remember was the godawful Driven that Sylvester Stallone gave us back in 2001. That movie was so bad that it's not even worth gracing the hallowed review halls of Badmovies.org with; "bad" and "mediocre" should not be synonymous with each other.

Daniel Brühl deserves an Academy Award for his performance as Niki Lauda. Chris Hemsworth was alright, but Brühl stole every scene he was in.
