A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: January 19, 2014, 01:53:40 AM »

This one has been out awhile but just hit the video store I go to this week, and I found it to be a very enjoyable, over-the-top violent horror/thriller.
The premise is simple enough:

The Davidsons, a fiftysomething couple, are having their kids and their significant others come home for their thirty-fifth anniversary.  The kids are a rather unlikable, bickering batch of yuppies who obviously can't stand each other.  That night, as the family gathers at the dinner table, the entire group comes under attack from a vicious team of masked assassins armed with crossbows and axes.  One by one, the Robinsons are shot and chopped to death, as the terrified survivors try to figure out who is doing this - and why.

Without a ton of spoilers, I will say that this movie exceeded my expectations, with several amazing plot twists and some impressive gore effects. Plus some gems of dialogue like:

"Why don't you just die already? Don't you know how hard this is for me?"

and then my favorite:

"Where's Felix?"
"I jammed a blender down on his head and killed him."
"That's perfectly understandable."

With shades of THE STRANGERS and FUNNY GAMES, this is an excellent, very watchable film.   And the "final girl" is as tough as any I have ever seen in any movie!

Can't really say why, but for some reason I didn't like the twist or the reason why the masked killers attack the family.
The film was alright, though and the survivor-girl was absolutely amazing.

just seen this, didn't realise it was that old, thought it was 2014.

yeah, as home invasion horror type movies go I've seen worse, but some of the acting was terrible - couple of times it felt like I was watching a bunch of drama students whose teacher had suddenly told them to improvise a scenario with no warning of what it would be beforehand.

couple of the deaths were really good. One made me actually laugh

Overall it kept my attention which is basically good enough to me these days, just don't anyone dare call this a 'game changer' or a 'breath of fresh air in the horror world' or anything, lol

Its pretty much the Home Alone of horror, but I thought it was pretty good.

I went from "overrated" to "well yeah, it's pretty good" between two viewings. I think Lionsgate's approach at releasing this much praised movie was wrong, resulting in under-performing at the box office (though with a budget of $1m it grossed $25m worldwide). Lionsgate sat on the film for two years (way too long) and then BOOM! - wide release. Movies like You're Next needs to build an audience. Limited release first then slowly expanding to more theaters. Kind of like what the Weinstein's did with It Follows.

well if the budget was 1 mill then they did very well to end up with what they got tbh

it doesn't make me like the movie any more but the gore fx were impressive, and the overall feel was not what I'd call cheap/tacky.

there were just too many moments of acting/script/plot ineptness for it to be a good film, imo

Loved it.

There's one thing I hate in movies. This person has tried to kill you for the whole movie. When you have the chance to kill them don't hold back. Bash that f**ker's brain in until they're dead. This movie did that. And then it was a bit more clever. Great.

Exactly!  In the first scene, when she took down one of the attackers and made sure he STAYED down, I was like: "FINALLY! Someone gets it!"
