THE SHOOTIST (1975) on TCM 12:45 am EST

JOHN WAYNE's best performance, not his greatest film, but worthwhile.

Not the best John Wayne film.  Not my favorite John Wayne film.  But one of my most frequently watched John Wayne films.

And "The Duke" went out on a high note. One of his best performances. Unfortunately, most people knew that he was dieing of cancer, when the film was released, so they felt it was uncomfortablely too true to life. Thus, the film did not perform as well as it should have at the box office.

But, he was more than ablely supported by . . .

Lauren Bacall -- Ron Howard -- Jimmy Stewart -- Richard Boone -- Hugh O'Brian -- Bill McKinney -- Harry Morgan -- John Carradine -- Sheree North -- and Scatman Crothers.

And in archival film footage seen during the film . . .

Johnny Crawford -- Christopher George -- Leo Gordon -- Ricky Nelson -- and Bob Steele.

They don't make films like this anymore.

This movie also makes you appreciate Don Siegel as a director.  The guy was never at the top of the heap with the all-time great directors, but he always seemed to make solid, entertaining movies in a straightforward style.  The Shootist, Dirty Harry, Coogan's Bluff, Madigan, Invasion of the Body Snatchers . . . all good movies.

Can't disagree with any of that.  Edcellent which is... uh, nobody cares...  Let's not go back to those threads.

I do love THE SHOOTIST despite its many imperfections.
