In July, 366 Weird Movies declares independence from the ordinary!

L'IMMORTELLE (1963): Certified Weird! "Everything commonly accepted to be true in real life is cast in suspicion here; the woman shows our professor all the tourist-trap wonders of Istanbul, then tells him that they’re all fakes, she takes him to a cemetery and tells him that nobody is really buried there, she writes down her address, then immediately she says it’s not even her real address (it is later revealed that the piece of paper had nothing written on it to begin with, to further muddy the waters). Aspersions are cast on the most fundamental story elements, and by the end, the audience is left shell-shocked and nearly as confused as our protagonist."-EY

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (2014): "Once past the confusing opening, X-Men: Days Of Future Past shifts gear into ambitious, melodramatic fun, and has a few surprises up its sleeve, at least to those of us who forgot our Marvel concordance."-AE

JODOROWSKY'S DUNE (2013): "Jodorowsky’s Dune is without a doubt the most spectacular movie that never got made."-TM

INTERVIEW: JAMES WARD BYRKIT, DIRECTOR OF "COHERENCE"

COHERENCE (2013): " It’s exciting both as a chilling peek into the dark shadows of alternate realities, and as an example of how resourceful filmmakers can produce thrilling effects using nothing more expensive than their own brains."

SNOWPIERCER (2014): "Entertainment-driven popcorn viewing that makes up the mainstay of the Hollywood summer slate can be forgiven for saying things badly, given that it has so little to say; but Snowpiercer has a brilliant central plot device, yet Bong and his co-writer Kelly Masterton's increasingly obscure and irrational narrative comes across as a desperate distraction to take the viewers' minds off the fact that the writer and director have no clue of where their film needs to go."-JH

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION (2014): "Doubtless, the besotted businessmen funding this clanging, metallic peepshow fancy their product as imaginative enough to rake in plenty of dyed green paper from its zombified audience."-AE

RADIO FREE ALBEMUTH (2010): "A tale of pink, pro-rock n’ roll aliens beaming hallucinatory political advice to subversives from a satellite orbiting earth, Radio Free Albemuth is totally baffling if you don’t know the backstory behind it. It may be even stranger if you do."

ENEMY (2013): Certified weird! " As tightly controlled as a dictatorship and as enigmatic as a tarantula on a gold serving platter, the inscrutable Enemy evokes a panicky existential dread in the tradition of David Lynch. The final scene will provoke debate for as long as people watch weird movies."

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2014): "Aided by motion capture, Serkis’ powerhouse performance as Caesar is even more impressive this time around and is the most, if not the only, successful collaboration between actor and CGI to date. "-AE

SUGAR HILL (1974): Part of what distinguishes Sugar Hill is that it isn’t based on a piece of 19th century European literature, but is instead a more distinctly black American narrative which synthesizes elements of Voodoo iconography, fairy tales, and classic b-horror film tropes. It’s occasionally clumsy and highly stylized script offers all of the cliches that you’d hope for in a blaxploitation film."-BE

MIDNIGHT SKATER (2002): "It is a crime that this glorified home movie somehow got onto Netflix, and might accidentally take up a slot people could use to rent a real film."

Finishing up July:

25TH ANNIVERSARY: BATMAN (1989): "...still among the brightest of the comic book genre films; an odd thing, given how dark it is."-AE

25TH ANNIVERSARY: STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER (1989): "A bored Klingon and his buxom babe, Uhura’s moonlit striptease, Scotty’s sudden lust for Uhura while eating potato chips, agnostic theology at its most cornball, a Heaven planet with unforgivably cheap FX, and a fuzzy group hug finale solicit well-earned groans, even more so twenty-five years later. However, despite the PC interracial cast, occasional sexism, barbershop-styled backslapping, a lot of bad acting, and the fanatical following, it is easy to succumb to the charm of the original cast..." -AE

NYMPHOMANIAC, VOL. 1 & 2 (2013):"The depraved behavior that we see these characters engage in is ghastly and cruel, but it’s all so beautifully shot and presented that the pornographic elements become more like a reflection of reality than a means of cheaply shocking viewers."-RA

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE (2013): "Colorful, arabesque, and throbbing with a melancholy drone, the purpose of the movie is not to tell a story so much as to enfold us inside of these vampires’ immortal languor."

A FANTASTIC FEAR OF EVERYTHING (2012): "Fortunately, there is a lot of extraneous stuff going on to distract us from the movie’s nerve-wracking protagonist—eyeball hallucinations, self-aware Psycho references, paper doll reenactments of famous murders, creepy anthropomorphic stop-animated children’s stories, guided meditation with a pirate psychologist—and thus Everything manages to remain watchable by keeping itself busy."

BLUE MOVIE (1978): "Be warned that Blue Movie is as trashy as it is artful: its perversion, madness, trauma, bodily fluids and softcore sex will be unpalatable for many."-TM

THE CONGRESS (2013): "Underneath the bitter satire and trippy visuals, The Congress is ultimately about identity, and how it becomes another commodity to be bartered—at first, hesitantly by Robin [Wright], and ultimately as a way of life for the populace."-LRH/AK

THE END OF TIME (2012):"The final act is a lysergic digital freakout presumably representing 'the end of time,' beginning with the extinction of the sun, which turns into a bunch of glowing green mandalas and segues into a cosmic Malickian montage. The overall result—abstract and meandering, sometimes deep, sometimes pretentious, beautiful but frequently slow as molasses—is definitely not for all tastes."
