I remember seeing this as a kid in the 80s very early 1990s on Cinemax or HBO.  Its in color and it was a serious sort of drama from what I recall not a goofy comedy.

The plot is a caveman is found encased in ice (with a mammoth?) perfectly preserved, is thawed out and revived in modern times by a scientist who then tries to educate him so they can communicate better.

The only part I remember vividly was at towards the end of the film the caveman cracks up, puts his furs on, grabs some weapons and escapes from wherever he was being held and is chased down by the scientist and some guys in a helicopter across a cold desolate looking place.

The caveman scales a large hill/mountain and starts screaming and throwing stuff/shooting at the helicopter and one of the men aboard shoots him and he collapses from his wounds and dies. I think it ends with the scientist who revived him crying.

Its not Encino Man, Teenage Caveman, or Ringo Starr's Caveman. That much I know but these seem to be the only results I get when I try to search this movie out.

I concur with retrorussell, this is definitely Iceman (1984).  I remember seeing this movie in the theater when it first opened.
