80's movie stumper

So there is this movie I vaguely remember seeing in the mid-late 80's.  For some reason it is stuck in my head that the name of the movie is "Gloom".  But I have internet searched high and low and cannot find any title by that name.  Perhaps it only said gloom on the VHS cover… or perhaps I am confusing this title with a twilight zone or hitchhiker episode or something.  Either way I would like to know where the plot below is from, but I also really want to know why I just have the movie title "gloom" tattooed on my brain.  I am 99.9% sure there was a b-movie or tv movie by this title at the very least. 

General Plot:

A guy discovers a pit of some kind and discovers that if he lowers things into the hole, when he comes back the next day or something, he retrieves his lowering contraption and finds that the object has been replaced with gold.

The last thing I remember is that he either gets greedy and goes down in the hole, or wants to kill someone and sends them down the hole.

oh, and either him or the guy he sent down there is pulled out later and their coveralls and gas mask they were wearing is completely filled with gold.

It sounds like an episode of The Twilight Zone.
I haven't actually seen it, but a friend once described it to me.
A farmer finds aliens living in his well, and they start giving him gold in exchange for flashlights.
Then his wife finds out & starts giving them chicken in exchange for gold, & suddenly they don't want flashlights anymore, & that's when the ending you described happens...

I'm almost positive you're thinking of an episode of Amazing Stories called Thanksgiving.
