A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: September 27, 2014, 09:10:59 AM »

I watched this last night and found it to be a delightfully fun, quirky little comedy about the concierge of a famous hotel in a small East European country, and how he dealt with war, murder, imprisonment, and the attentions of lonely old women.  Cameos by Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, and solid supporting roles by Adrian Brody and William Defoe helped, but the film's chief attraction is the incredibly solid performance by Ralph Fiennes as Concierge Gustave H. and Tony Revolori as the lobby boy Zero Moustafa who becomes his protégé and closest friend.  Their improbable adventures are wacky enough, but the chemistry between these two characters - one the impeccable manager of a premier resort hotel, the other a penniless refugee child - make this movie a delight to view.  When we were done with it, my wife looked at me and said "That was weird - but it was FUN weird!"
I can't sum it up any better!  5/5

Also enjoyed GBH. Ray Fiennes was epic in it for sure. It's not Oscar worthy for me, except for Wes Anderson as best directory maybe - even though its more of the same from him....Very well shot and every actor in it nails it.

Should NOT be missed by anyone.

Yeah, I also really loved this one. Instantly made it to my list of favorite comedy films of all time.
I also really enjoy the fact the movie's got some pretty gruesome and serious content - for instance, there's a freaking severed head and there are nazis (they're obviously meant to be a nazis). It's kinda brilliant.
