This is driving me crazy. I watched this movie maybe a month or two ago, and I cannot find it again for the life of me. It may or may not be new; it was most certainly modern, at least, 2000s+. It went something like this:

Typical group of idiots ends up in the woods somehow. They end up getting chased by some kind of monster(s), a few are either lost or killed, and the survivors end up finding this big house in the middle of the woods. They flee to the house for safety from the monster, only to find a few people are already occupying the house, who had previously been chased there by the monster. Most of these people are helpful, but one (I think he was a black guy) was lurking around upstairs being a total pansy. The people already in the house explain the monster is keeping them trapped there, and they have some defenses built up around the house.

The monster keeps trying to get in, and eventually one of the main chars from the original group of idiots tries to run for help while some others distract the monster. The guy running for help comes back on the verge of death. I don't really remember the rest.

Pretty sure this is a fairly new movie so hopefully won't be too hard to figure out. Thanks so much!!

A lot of potential matches. Have a look through this list, perhaps the film is on it:

Definitely not dog soldiers.

Don't see it on the list either, though there's some interesting movies there I don't recall seeing before.

Trapped in the house was a middle-aged man and his wife I think, and there was another guy upstairs who was all gloom and doom, the pansy guy. Plus the main chars which showed up, I believe the typical college-age kids, couple girls and a couple guys.

When they tried to bait the monster, the husband guy (I think) went out into the yard to attract it, while one of the kids stood on the balcony or something to watch for it and warn the bait guy when it was getting near. Then when these two tried to get back in, the pansy guy tried to keep them locked out. They did get back in though and they ended up tying up pansy guy.

Gah if I could just remember what the monster was this would be so easy.

Was there like some Southern preacher guy and a young girl he had the hots for trapped in the house?  I remember a similar movie that had those characters.  I think they were battling mutated people or something.

I don't think there were any preacher-types. I'm 99% sure the monster wasn't mutated people; it was an alien or sasquatch or something, it was its own thing. I think there was just one monster. Not real sure on that though, I watch so many horror movies I might be confused.

I think Jack is remembering Brain Dead (2007), which is not the Peter Jackson film. It does sort of match your description.

Every dead body that is not exterminated becomes one of them. It gets up and kills. The people it kills, get up and kill.
