Today I tried my hand at a dipping sauce which was from a copycat recipe of Papa John's Garlic Dip. The pizza (vegetable) I made for the occasion had a bit more crust than usual, so while eating I made sure to leave even more extra crust for dipping. This was my first time dipping pizza crust, the dip was very tasty/salty and the garlic was kind of overwhelming but in a good way.
The thick crust from the pizza was not a tasteless dried out piece of baked flour however, so I'm still kind of torn about the necessity of dipping a pizza crust. Living in Europe, dipping pizza crust is totally unheard of. What's your stance on dipping pizza crust?

I like Papa John's garlic sauce, but it's hardly an essential part of the pizza experience.

I'm gonna vote NO on this topic.

If the crust is done correctly, it should be like the last bit of bread left after you eat the rest of the sandwich: a pleasant afterthought. Given the fact you can tinker with your crust to give it its own flavor or style (add seasonings, brush on flavored butter, sprinkle with various cheeses and so on) and that a lot of American pizza places are now dolling up their crusts, it makes dipping your crust even less appealing.

Having said that, you always have people who like the intensity of flavor that comes with dipping. It can be a nice change, but, for me, it is the exception and never the rule.

On a side note, I avoid Papa John's garlic sauce because I've apparently developed an allergy to either garlic or some other chemical that ends up in garlic flavoring.

They've got dipping sauce for pizza crust now?  This is like...all of my dreams have come true!!!   TeddyR

We always get the cheesy bread sticks with marinara sauce for an appetizer, which I almost like better than the pizza itself, so I'm definitely in favor of this newfangled invention.

IMO dipping sauce isn't necessary for anything. Ketchup is another story though...

As Java said, if the crust is good, it's fine. Donato's thick crust fits that bill for me. A pizza crust should be as good as the toppings...should be...

Personally, I like the garlic sauce the best.  I'll save ranch for my wings or salads.  The marinara just tastes too similar to the sauce already on the pizza.

If it's a good pizza the dip isn't necesssary. I have four kids, who of which are teenagers so when we get pizza it's Little Caesars (quantity over quality) and the dipping sauce is good with it.
