Late 80 or 90s movie about a young thug who meets a scientist with a chair.

This has been driving me crazy. All I remember is .. Late 80 or 90s thriller/psychological movie about a young thug who, at a bar in a small town, meets a scientist putting on some show with a special chair he made. The locals red necks harass the old doctor and the young thug intervenes. All go their own way but the two meet up the next day and the local cop asks them some questions about the night before because the red neck was found dead. Both have alibis so the cop can't doing anything about it. So who killed the red neck the thug or the scientist. Turns out that the scientist travels from town to town with his chair in a station wagon and offers the thug a ride. All I can remember after that is at some point they end up at the scientist's house out in the country and the thug meets his daughter.

BTW, I remember that the thug was a wanna be teen heart throb tough guy who played in some TV shows in the 80s and 90s. I remember because I watched the movie despite the fact that I never cared for him. I've tried googling the cast from TV shows that had the teen heart throb tough guys and googling movie lists but haven't yielded any results. It's driving me crazy because I can picture some scenes and remember thoughts and feelings I had watching the scene but can't picture the faces.

Sounds like it might be a Tales From the Crypt episode but I'm not sure.

I went through a list of all the Tales from the Crypt episodes on tv.com, but couldn't find anything that matched the movie I'm looking for. Thanks for the help though Ash.
