A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: January 24, 2015, 11:50:28 AM »

Robert Carradine and Curtis Armstrong (better known as Lewis and Booger from the classic 1980's movie series REVENGE OF THE NERDS) are back, hosting 12 nerds over 8 episodes in a free for all to determine who will win $100,000 dollars and the Crown of Nerdvana, as well as the right to sit atop the Throne of Games!  Last night was the premiere episode, and it looks like a good crop.

It seems last years "King," a female NASA engineer, fulfilled her dream of being the first human on Mars, but the succumbed to "space madness" and tried to destroy Nerdvana, causing the Elder Nerds to move the Throne of Games deep to an underground bunker, where it remains securely protected and waiting a new occupant.

Now twelve new contenders have arrived - Gamers, Cosplay specialists, NASA engineers, Puzzle Designers, Bookworms, a former Jeopardy champion, a Brony, and a Marine Biologist - and have been divided into teams.

There was a bit of early drama when the future versions of Lewis and Booger showed up, Terminator-style, to warn their current incarnations NOT to let the Nerds pick their own teams this year - and also, a cryptic warning to Bobby to "watch out for the pickle."

Then the two teams squared off in the first Nerd War - to build a Steampunk Rube Goldberg contraption that would unveil their banners with the Team Names on them.  Both teams built impressive contraptions, and the names are pretty cool - Team Hooloovoo and Team S.M.A.S. H.  (I believe the acronym stands for Supreme Masters And Slayers of Hordes).  However, team Hooloovoo won, so S.M.A.S.H. had to send one of its members to a nerd-off, with team Hooloovoo picking the other one to go.  SMASH picked Ori, an engineering student who had shown himself singularly useless in building their contraption.  Everyone expected Team Hooloovoo to pick the Colby, Jeopardy champion, but instead they chose the likable Puzzle Master Jacob, who mainly because he was a the guy on SMASH that everyone liked.

The Nerd-Off involved Jacob and Ori dressing up as Kaiju and answering a series of questions on anime - as soon as they got a question right, they were allowed to destroy one sector of the mini-Tokyo set the hosts provided.  Jacob missed one question, so now the incompetent Ori has to return to the team that voted for him to leave, which will sow further hate and discord among them.

FIRST EPISODE OBSERVATIONS - Kaitlin, the NASA engineer on Team Hooloovoo, is very unpleasant.  She needs to go soon.  Also, the Brony, Thomas, is exceptionally annoying.  Most of the female cast members this year are really cute, but I rather like Todd "the Bod," a very funny fat guy and comic book expert on Team SMASH.

All in all, it's promising to be a GREAT season!

Well crud, I forgot to type up an entry for last week's episode, so I guess tonight I'll do a twofer!

In Week Two, Team Hooloovoo and Team S.M.A.S.H. squared off in an epic cosplay competition!
Hooloovoo seemingly had an insurmountable advantage, since one of their members, Lily, is a semi-professional cosplayer. She immediately set about making gorgeous costumes for the team, while letting them come up with a story that had an important moral lesson.

Team S.M.A.S.H. knew they could not beat Lily's costume skills, so they went for relatively minimal costuming and focused on coming up with a well-written storyline  with an important moral lesson.

Both teams presented their plays before a three-judge panel that included a legendary Asian Cosplayer and Billy Boyd of LOTR fame, plus another dude I can't remember.

Hooloovoo had some great costumes, but their story was weak and their moral hard to figure out.
S.M.A.S.H. did a great story about a killer robot whose programming was overcome by the power of love - featuring some pretty impressively choreographed fight scenes along the way.  It was a close vote, but ultimately S.M.A.S.H. won by two votes to one.

Thomas, the annoying Brony, was voted into the Nerd-Off by his teammates, while Team S.M.A.S.H. voted the dangerously skilled NASA engineer Kaitlyn into the Nerd-Off.

The challenge was riddles, administered by the sylvan creatures of the forest in a Monty-Python cosplay setting.  Thomas was pretty sharp, but the first one to answer three riddles correctly won - and Kaitlyn edged him out by one riddle!  So the supersmart and socially awkward NASA engineer remained in the game, while the Eagle Scout/Brony rode off into the sunset - or he would have, if Curtis the Elder Nerd had not pushed a button that caused a giant "My Little Pony" hoof to come from the sky and squash him as he left.

Now on to week three!

Tonight's theme was "Nerds of the Ancient World."
Team S.M.A.S.H. and Team Hooloovoo were charged with building boats out of cardboard, duct tape, and glue that would carry their team members across the Nerdriatic Sea (a fair-sized swimming pool), collecting clues as they went.  The clues were math problems, which, when solved, gave the five digits that provided the combination to a lock box on the far side of the pool.  Once the box was open, a crown of golden leaves was removed and had to be carried back across the Nerdriatic Sea and placed on one of the two marble busts that waited back at the starting points. The boats might sink or float, but the team had to tow the boat back across to its starting point in order to win.

S.M.A.S.H. got their boats in the water first, but the oars constructed by Ori fell apart quickly, and their boats both sank before reaching the far shore.  Hooloovoo took longer to get into their boats, but the boats held up better - only one sank at all, and Hooloovoo got their clues gathered first and got across the Nerdriatic Sea first.  They did manage to solve the math problems first also, but had no clue what order the five digits would go in to unlock the combination.
S.M.A.S.H. got across the Sea last, but they figured out early on that the letter used to indicate the unknown part of each geometry problem spelled out NERDS - giving them the order they needed to make the combination work!  Team Hooloovoo was still trying random combinations when S.M.A.S.H. towed their soggy, sunken boats back across the Nerdriatic and triumphantly placed the crown on the bust of Bobby Carradine. S.M.A.S.H. won the Nerd War!

Soggy and disappointed, Team Hooloovoo now had to vote one of their own into the Nerd-Off.  Their unanimous choice was "Todd the Bod" - the cheerful fat comic book nerd who had proven to be short-tempered and spiteful, despite being a hard worker.  Team S.M.A.S.H. voted to send Kaitlyn to the Nerd-Off, knowing that if she lost, a very strong contender would be gone and Todd would be left to utterly wreck his team, since he was angry over being voted in - but if she won, harmony would return to Nerdvana and the competition would continue.

The Nerd-Off involved mythology - matching one of fifty objects assembled on the far side of a grassy circle with a mythological character read off by Bobby and Curtis.  However, to get to the objects, the two contestants had to get past a Japanese Sumo wrestler in full mud-flap regalia.  Despite his encyclopedic knowledge of comic book lore, Todd - who had pitched a royal fit at his team for being voted in - failed to get a single question right, while Kaitlyn easily matched the items to their myths and walked away victorious for the second week in a row.

Todd said his good-byes, then headed back to the comic book store - except Zeus was apparently still upset with him, because he was incinerated by a lightning bolt as he left Nerdvana.

So what will next week's Nerd War be?
Who will win $100,000 and the right to sit atop the Throne of Games?

I can't wait to see!

I quit updating it this week because I think ER and I are the only two people on here who follow the show -
but tonight was the finale, and Jonathan the Mathematician was crowned as KING OF THE NERDS, beating
out Marine Biologist Ben for the title.  The other two in the Final Four were Lily, the uber-hot cosplayer, and
Kaitlyn, the NASA engineer.  For the first time, we actually had a GUY crowned as King - since this is the third
season, it's about time!

And on a related, but much sadder note, yesterday Bobby Carradine, the show's co-host, was involved in a serious
car accident and is not doing well. Prayers and best wishes for his quick recovery!

No, don't stop updating, as I don't have a TV, I have found your updates are the best way to follow the show. His brother David accidentally hangs himself, then Robert is involved in an automobile accident. Our prayers are with him for a full and speedy recovery.

One lingering question from this season. What exactly was a "pom-pom kitty"? Just something they made up, or was she a reference to something?

She's the eye candy girl that hangs around with Curtis and Bobby - who are, to be honest, both kind of hard on the eyes.
