The sleep of reasoner breeds monsters. (sic)

So I have been caught up in VH1's new series Hindsight, one in a long line of shows that feature someone cast backward into the past, given the chance to review life from the perspective of hindsight and change the choices that were made. (Plus this show is set in an era when I was in high school and it's kinda cool to see mid-'90s nostalgia... beepers over phones, dial-up modems, even a few lingering baby doll dresses, and all that great music!)

Watching this has got me thinking about things I would do differently if I were all of a sudden to find myself in a younger version of me, say circa 1995.

Well there's tons of stuff, of course, but one thing that'd surely have huge impact is I'd go to the college I was "supposed" to go to before I bailed for a long road trip in the summer. I can only imagine how much different things would be with new people met, different classes, teachers, experiences...that'd be major. Of course I'm happy with this life now and changing the timeline would be destroying it, more or less murdering some people, even, but you know, for fantasy's sake it's a fun exercise to imagine.

Let's see, I'd go look up a certain Texan before he met his first wife and blow his mind by how much I knew about him. By any means necessary I'd take away another friend's car keys on an unforgettably terrible day. I'd be a lot nicer to my mom, and for the love of mercy, I'd make my grandpa quit f**king smoking!!!!

I'd probably also make my first kiss just a first kiss so he could stay my very dear friend and I'd never hurt him like I did. I'd put less emphasis on playing tennis, eat more, take fewer AP classes, and in general stress-out less and enjoy being young. I'd avoid this one pseudo-predator teacher of mine like the plague and might even turn him in because he's possibly still pulling his mentor/mindscrewer routine to this day.

I'd take my dog to college with me instead of leaving her with my dad, convince my best friend not to go to Mexico on a humanitarian dental clinic trip with her mom in 2002 where she met an awful man she nearly married, and I'd tell her brother not to put drugs in that Diet Coke the night of the Ohio State-Miami game in 2003. Oh, I'd also tell him to appreciate his wife a lot more because he treats her like a mutt when she's a really nice person.

I'd also sure as heck change employers....

As to whether I'd still go to Riverfest where I met Landon in 2001....could I live with myself if I didn't?

Annnieway, long story short, I'd play God with the universe if I went back in time, and just possibly in truest "A Sound of Thunder" style, muck it all up uber-badly.

Anyone wanna give some thought to what you'd do if you suddenly found yourself re-living your own life twenty years ago?

Mostly explain to myself to lighten the hell up and not be a twit and enjoy life more. However, to quote Terry Pratchett in Night Watch:

"That was always the dream, wasn’t it? ‘I wish I’d known then what I know now’? But when you got older you found out that you now wasn’t you then. You then was a twerp. You then was what you had to be to start out on the rocky road of becoming you now, and one of the rocky patches on that road was being a twerp."

A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

I would have hit the hump at the Slabs before those fishermen found it in 1996 and have about 3000 more arrowheads in my collection than I do now.
And I would tell Sarah's parents to get her heart checked out before she turned 16, at all costs!

It's always a paradox because because if you put my 50 year old self in my 16 year old body, I'd just find all that teenage drama equal parts boring and intolerable.  I'd probably start playing guitar a few years earlier, I'd definitely date different girls, and probably pay more attention to my schoolwork and not be such an obnoxious angst-ridden ass to my parents.  Think I'd major in math in college instead of accounting.
