I'm a Mac...

« on: May 23, 2015, 10:26:55 PM »

I had to get a USB cable for my printer tonight so I went to Target. They didn't have a long enough one so I then went next door to Radio Shack, which is going to be closing in the next few days.  I lucked out - they had one there that was more than long enough.  I work at home and needed a longer cable because of the where my printer sits and my work laptop is sitting, and because it can't see the wi-fi printer when it's connected to the VPN.

I'm actually sad to see the local Radio Shack going out of business. I did a lot of business with them when I was growing up.  They were pretty much the only game in town for computers, software, and accessories during the 80s and the first part of the 90s.  Otherwise you'd need to drive over an hour to get to cities that had stores selling computers and accessories.  My first computer was a Tandy 1000 HX.

Once the local Sears started selling computers (such as Packard Hell) and related items and Staples opened a store in town I stopped visiting them quite as much.  Especially after I got my second computer - a 486sx Dell Dimension running at 25mhz.  By then Tandy had sold their computer business to AST and Radio Shacks were selling computers by manufacturers like Compaq.  I can count on one hand the number of times I've been in the local Radio Shack over the past decade, but still it's sad to see them going away now.  Even though I wasn't going in there too often I thought they'd be around until doomsday.  It's not going to be the same with them not being in that plaza next door to Target.

I used to go there a lot many years go.  You could walk in and say "You got a .47 microfarad capacitor?" and sure enough they did.  Always trying to upsell you too lol.  Went in once wanting a cheap cord for my stereo;  walked out with a $25 thing with gold plated connectors.

I haven't been in one in ages.  Looks like they mostly sell cell phones and stuff these days.

I remember when Radio-shack sold Tandy computers and RC robots.

Stopped at Target tonight to pick up stuff.  Noticed that the going out of business / store closing stuff was all down and the former Radio Shack was dark & empty now.

Kind of sad to see that store gone now, they had been there about 30 years.
