A good bad movie is like popcorn for the soul!

« on: June 04, 2015, 11:03:18 AM »

I just finished watching this rather fascinating film, and I am still processing it.  Here is a bare-bones synopsis without too many spoilers:

Evan is a twentysomething bartender and cook from California who just watched his Mom die from cancer only a year after losing his Dad to a fatal heart attack.  The night after the funeral he goes with his best friend to the bar where he works and gets in a fight with a customer and winds up losing his job.  He decides to use his modest inheritance to go on a vacation to Italy and decompress for awhile.

While there, he meets a beautiful and mysterious girl named Louise.  She wants to sleep with him with no strings attached, but he is more interested in a relationship.  Despite her initial reluctance, she winds up dating him over a period of a week or more.  He quickly discovers, however, that she is extremely secretive and prone to disappear suddenly, without explanation, and then show up again and act as if nothing has happened.

As they grow closer, he realizes that she is harboring a ghastly secret.  She changes shape without warning and has to inject herself with mysterious serums to maintain her human form.  But even seeing her in the worst throes of her condition, he still loves her.  The question is, can he survive her love?

Part sci-fi, part romance, part horror, this is a beautiful, well-acted film that raises a lot of questions about love, mortality, biology, and even faith.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I didn't like this as much as Indy. Interesting premise, and the last half-hour is good, but the early pacing is too slow, and the whole thing is overweighted to the drama/romance side.We could have done without all the scenes with the British guys he meets up with in Rome; this takes up time while adding nothing essential to the story. A little trimming would have made this stronger.

It's always a fine line between character development and plain old padding.
