After seeing two Bible movies that butchered the stories they were supposed to re-tell (NOAH and EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS), I was in a mood for a good, uplifting Christian film. So this week I rented DO YOU BELIEVE?, a movie made by the same folks who did GOD'S NOT DEAD last year.
This movie was even better. I can't remember a Christian film that I have enjoyed this much. I spent most of the last 20 minutes sniffling, to be honest. This is a beautiful story about how 12 lives intersect and are changed forever on a dark night in a large city. At the beginning of the movie, a tired, overworked pastor runs into an old black man carrying a cross down the street. The old man asks him one question: "Do you believe in the cross of Christ?"
Over the next hour and a half, a young gang member, a retired couple who lost their daughter in a car crash and finally decide to stop mourning and begin to live again, a Christian EMT who is at the heart of a lawsuit and his wife, a nurse, an ex-con who is trying to make things right before he dies, a pregnant teenager, a homeless widow and her young daughter, an atheist attorney and her doctor boyfriend, and the pastor and his wife all interact in a complex web of circumstances that shines the light of God into a sleepy church and a desperate community.
Those of you who are hostile to Christianity may not like this film, but I found it to be a beautiful story. Sean Astin and Sybil Shepherd are among the more recognizable faces in the cast. I highly recommend this film.
