Director Wes Craven died this afternoon in Los Angeles. Craven was 76 and passed away after battling brain cancer.

From his first feature film The Last House On The Left in 1972, Craven immediately made his mark as a genre-bending, bracingly innovative horror director with a biting sense of humor. Craven also consistently demonstrated that he was a filmmaker with heart.

Craven reinvented the youth horror genre again in 1984 with the classic and very scary A Nightmare on Elm Street, which also introduced a then-unknown Johnny Depp.

I just heard.. very sad.  Not all his movies were good but I still have tremendous respect for what he brought to the horror genre.  Rest in peace Wes.

The man wasn't a master imho but, when he got it right, he delivered things like The Hills Have Eyes and The Serpent and the Rainbow.  Even most of his failures had a nice little spark to them, such as Deadly Friend.  And, of course, the importance of Freddy Krueger to the horror genre cannot be overstated.

RIP, indeed.

I despise his earliest film which is both influential and important, yet, have really liked two or three others...

Good night, WESLEY, you won't soon be forgotten.

His cameo in Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back always makes me smile.

So that's how I'll always remember him: thank you, Mr Wes for all the thrills and the chills.

Wes Craven: Shannen, I usually say cut.

Shannen Doherty: A monkey? Wes? [Expletive deleted] you're not even trying anymore are you?

Wes Craven: The Market research says that people love monkeys.

[Jay and Silent Bob run in and grab the monkey]

Jay: WE LOVE THIS MONKEY!

[to a crew member]

Jay: Do something.

Wes Craven: See?

While I wasn't a fan of all of his movies (I always thought he had a problem coming up with a good ending), I will always remember being 9 around 10 years old and being scared of the first Nightmare on Elm Street. Sadly it was also the last film I ever felt scared watching.

Anyway, thanks for the frights.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite horror movie.

This new is extremely depressing.

I didn't know when I wrote this but Wes Craven was in his seventies. While that's not a super old age, I shouldn't be that surprised.

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise was a huge part of my life. If it wasn't for Wes' creation, I never would've delved further into the horror genre.

Goodbye, Wes. Though you're gone, your work and name will go down in history and will continue to inspire many. Rest in peace.
