This is the BEST horror film I have seen in a long, long time! I don't even know if horror is the right word for it. This movie is a mind-bending reality trip that continues to stock one surprise after another. It's like GROUND HOG DAY on crystal meth, if it were filmed by a serial killer.
Confused yet?
OK, here's a quick synopsis: Milton is a former chemistry major who got arrested for cooking meth and is now in the tail end of a rehab program, three months from being released. One night a beautiful young woman named Skyler shows up in group therapy, and it turns out that, rather than looking for rehabilitation from the evils of meth, she's actually looking for someone who can cook up "glass quality" crystal quickly and neatly. She seduces poor Milton into going along with the scheme, and then her psychotic cop boyfriend Russell (brilliantly played by Ari Boyland) shows up and breaks poor Milton loose. They drive to a very remote cabin in the desert mountains, and spend the evening in drunken celebration. The next morning Milton wakes up and begins his task - cooking 85 pounds of extremely high quality crystal that will fetch $1800 an ounce. But when he is done, Russell turns on him and tries to kill him, only to be gunned down by Skyler. They bury the body, treat Milton's wound (his ear was shot clean off), and spend the night together before taking off with the meth the next morning. Except the next morning they wake up, Milton's ear is reattached, and Russell is still alive with no memory of having been shot the night before. So they do it again. And again. And again. Nothing seems to break the cycle: no matter how many times they kill Russell, no matter how they do it, and no matter how far they try to flee after doing the deed. So how can they escape from this bizarre cycle of murder?
Brilliantly acted, cleverly written, and gorgeously filmed, this is one of the coolest movies I have seen this year.
HIGHLY recommended.
